Obama killed by auto accident in 2007

If he died currently then its to late to change much as early voting has already started. As such ballots already have his name on them.

When you vote in a presidential election you're not actually voting for Obama or Romney or whoever. You are voting for an elector. This elector is pledged to vote for one candidate or another. If the candidate elected by the voters is deceased then the elector is no longer pledged to that candidate and may pick any other candidate who is eligible.

With his death though you'd have a depressed Democrat turnout on Nov 7th, even though some voters are already voting. It's going to affect the election. Lower Democrat turnout and then independents choosing a living candidate to vote for (which doesn't necessarily mean Romney, they could choose Johnson or someone else) what's going to happen in all probability is that Romney will outright win the election by a large landslide.

Those electors selected for Obama can choose anyone and some might choose Hilary Clinton, others might choose other people. The problem is with the depressed turnout for Democrats in the event of his death, they will not have enough electors to elect a Democrat President.

Now on the other had lets say this happened back in September before early voting started. The Democrat party would have had the option to select a new candidate, which most likely would of been Hilary Clinton. Unfortunately you then have this Libyan mess that blows up in her election and she still losses the election but by a small margin to Romney, after all it was her State Dept that caused the mess. (The worst thing Hilary ever did was agree to be Barack Obama's Secretary of State, its what killed Colin Powell's political career by being Bush's).

In 2007....

oops :)

Hmm 2008.

My Guess is Hilary wins the Democrat Nominee, Obama ran an unconventional primary battle in 2008, I don't believe the other democrats at the time could have and Hilary's win on Super Tuesday would of forced them out, whereas it didn't Obama because he used a different strategy.

My guess for VP would probably be Bill Richardson.

My guess for cabinet

Secretary of State: Evan Bayh
Secretary of the Treasury: Jonathan Mantz
Secretary of Defense: Wesley Clark
Attorney General: Joe Lieberman
Secretary of Interior: Huma Abedin
Secretary of Agriculture: Tom Vilsack
Secretary of Commerce: Russ Feingold
Secretary of Labor: Minyon Moore
Secretary of Health and Human Services: Maggie Williams
Secretary of Education: Hilda Solis
Secretary of Housing and Urban Development: Shaun Donovan
Secretary of Transportation: ???
Secretary of Energy: Neera Tanden
Secretary of Veteran Affairs: Eric Shinseki
Secretary of Homeland Security: ????

Chief of Staff: Cheryl Mills
Deputy Chief of Staff: Melanne Verveer
Ambassador to the UN: Evelyn S. Lieberman

Some fixes here and there. Clinton's cabinet is going to be to the right of Obama's.

Clinton barely wins the election losing virginia and some other states.

She appoints Joe Lieberman as her VP.

Why?

Because Joe Lieberman is always right.

Lieberman would never be made VP again in a million, million years. If that happened, Dems would sit home.

Bill Richardson can't be VP and Sec. of Commerce......

Also if we are going right of Obama no way Joe Biden is Secretary of State, Evan Byah was far more supportive of Clinton he'd get the nod I think.

A couple of thoughts, who else woudl run for the Democratic nomination in 2008 and

Senator Michelle Obama being appointed

Is she going to pay that rat of Gov Blago we had? It's "f#cking valuable." Or is he gonna give it to her as a placeholder?

No way Lieberman is going to be in the cabinet.

alternatehistory.com would have threads about an Obama presidency, and I would write about how ridiculous that assumption is.

At the time the prospect of the Senate seat coming open in early 2009 was something that was a possibility for months before that particular scandal broke.

In 2007, the idea of appointing Michelle Obama to her husband's seat in DC at least on a temporary basis would probably see a lot less flack from a tragic and unexpected event.

Though the chances of her accepting might not be so high. This timeline essentially turns her into a widow and a single mother with two young kids. Under the circumstances, putting her into the battlefield of Congress might put her in danger from emotional stress and health risks that come with it.

Progressives, still enchanted by Obama's change rhetoric, would be mad, frustrated or, dangerously enough, convinced of the existence of a conspiracy after Wellstone and Obama both die in "accidents".

Hillary would run, with Edwards as the major opposition. Hillary's campaigns would have the same problems as OTL, and Edwards could become the nominee, but he's a far sloppier campaigner than Obama and doesn't have his campaign team, so Hillary's got around a 75% chance of winning.

The Republican nomination is pretty much up for grabs thanks to butterflies. McCain only benefited from Huckabee, Romney and Thompson splitting the vote. If McCain doesn't win, the likely nominee is Romney.

A possible "Blah Case Scenario" could be butterflies keeping John Edwards out of trouble until he wins the presidency by the skin of this teeth, and then a combination of the adultery/crouching mistress, hidden child shitstorm with the level of sleaze inherently required to facilitate such a thing would make for an ugly one-term presidency. Edwards would try to pull off being the second incarnation of Bill Clinton, but even Bill Clinton would call him on this and yet even all that still would not be enough to boot Edwards out of office before losing the 2012 re-election.

A silver lining could be an aggressive-as-heck VP Hilary Clinton getting some kind of health care legislation passed anyhow? Maybe? (Or not.)
