O Tuponia? Alternate names for Canada

Borealia's the one I like the most: if they called the huge British settler colony in the eastern half of the southern hemisphere Australia, why not call the huge British settler colony in the western half of the northern hemisphere Borealia? Ontario or Quebec could keep the name "Canada" for themselves.

If Cartier had pulled a La Salle instead of choosing a local name, he could have named the lands "Franciscana" or "Franciscania" for Francis Ist, but it does not ring well in French. "Valesiana" for Valois or even "Angolesmia" for Angoulême are other possibilities.

There was already Nouvelle Angoulême before the colonisation of Canada in modern New York.

When I stumbled across that article on Facebook I jokingly rated them.

Albertsland: 5/10, sounds like a mediocre province name, bad for a country
Albionora: 6/10, that's a bloody Harry Potter spell, but at least it would probably have a nice demonym
Borealia: 8/10, pretty solid choice, classical and poetic
Britannia: 3/10, because Code Geass and confusing with great Britain
Cabotia: 8/10, decent tie to early Canadian history
Colonia: 1/10, let's name our colony colony. We're so creative.
Efisga: 2/10, silliest acronym I've ever heard, but at least it includes Germans and First Nation people
Hochelaga: 6/10, a bit too weird sounding for European tongues but it has its basis in history and describes Canada decently enough
Laurentia: 8/10, geographic reference and classical naming conventions a good country name make
Mesopelagia: 7/10, considering when it could've been adopted not good enough because it wasn't clear that the dominion would stretch to the Pacific
Norland: 2/10, lazy and reminds me of northern Sweden
Superior: 6/10, Lake Superior is kinda cool but I think it would go to their ego
Transatlantia/Transatlantica: 4/10, pretty lazy and turns bad once it reaches the Pacific
Tuponia/Tuponia: 3/10, another lazy acronym but at least it's better than Efisga
Ursalia: 9/10, because bears are cool
Vesperia: 8/10, yet another example of a cool classical name
Victorialand: 4/10, because of the Victoria colony in Australia already existed since 1851

As you can see, I think Ursalia and Borealia would be the coolest alternatives, and the butterflies those choices might pose are fun. Be it Ontario or Quebec (most likely it'd be Quebec) staying Canada, the Canadians not using the maple leaf as their default national symbol, and lots of other stuff you can't really predict with a mere name change... It's a great minor POD if you want a generic starting point.

I wonder what the flag would end up as if the maple leaf wasn't chosen? Maybe if Vesperia was the name, the flag would have a star on it to signify the evening star, and purple colour used as a backdrop to signify the evening? I assume Ursalia's flag would have a bear on it somewhere. Borealia's could depict the aurora borealis in some way. Too bad Vesperia is now associated with a videogame.

Are we talking about Canada the province or Canada the Dominion, because while I don't know enough to suggest different names for the conference, I think it is totally plausible to have a different name for the Dominion right up to the 1867 British North America Act.

Indeed, perhaps Newfoundland joins in 1867 (and perhaps Nova Scotia's government buys into Confederation too, rather than wasting it's energy in Anti-Confederate schemes) they consequently have sufficient influence to say no to a greater Canada and demand a different name for the new Dominion.

One would suspect something British would be adopted, like New Britain or Cabotia, but something classical like Vesperia or Norland if the Canada Easters make too much of a stink is also plausible.
