nuke in 1929

hey, this is just a question, but was it technologically possible to have built a nuclear weapon/reactor in the late 20's early 30's with Tesla and Einstein working on it

Interesting idea, but Einstein pretty much had nothing to do with the development of the atomic bomb - in the hands on sense. Lord Rutherford would be more influencial. I'm almost sure that this is quite outside the field of super high voltage for Tesla to become involved - not to mention how eccentric he was starting to become.

Impetus

What would be the impetus for this to happen? After all, it's not exactly something that you can just build in your garage, Thank God.

Really early WWII, I would think. But has nuclear science proceeded far enough for an Atomic bomb by the late 1920s?

It would involve some significant changes in the history of physics. You can't get a chain reaction until you know about fission. IIRC fission was first observed in 1938, and not explained until spring 1939. Fermi got the first pile up and running in December 1942.

To get a reactor or weapon earlier, you need to have the discovery of fission happen much earlier. That MIGHT be possible. However, as the neutron wasn't discovered until 1932, it would be hard to push it forward much.

Unless you intend to fast-forward scientific development 20 years just to get the AD date right, no. The physics weren't there, the economies weren't there, and perhaps most simply the metalurgy and material sciences weren't there. Making a bomb requires extremely high quality metals and precision instruments that were cutting edge (and still clumsy) in 1941. The Russians, despite having the bomb plans leaked to them early on, took close to half a decade to build their own because they material sciences were so rough.

Without the gear to enrich uranium or get the plutonium, you don't have a bomb.

I fear that a 1929 bomb would have been impossible , even with a very early second world war.

most people dont seem to realise the vast amount of resources necessary for the Manhatten project , for almost 4 years there were thousands of centrifuges (each containing significant amounts of silver ,for which thay had to dip into the federal reserve) and over 150,000 people worked day and night just to manufacture the two bombs dropped on japan.Tis only bieng possible to the ,vast latent industrial capability that had been freed up by the great depression. And that was with the benefits of a decade of intensive reasearch and well grounded theory , niether of which existed in 1929

The only way i can see this happening would involve a much earlier POD (ie. splitting the atom in the last quarter of the 19C) of some kind of time travel....

Possibly involving ninjas....

or a Mutant alarm cloack of some kind...:D

I agree that a bomb before the late 1930s is impossible, and it might take longer. And personally, a 1929 war right around when most nations fell into a depression would be interesting. No bomb, though. But how much can you accelerate the discovery of things which would help you make a bomb?

well i was looking for lvl of tech at the time...i've kinda got an idea of a POD being that Teddy doesn't announce that he considers McKinnely's 2nd term is first and therefore his first elected term is much like his first "real" term and has much more power and influence expecailly in the millitary and starts to make is "walk softly and carry a big stick" philosophy more ingrained in the army's psyche, and does a "great white fleet" approach to the army

as for the Tesla and Einstein angle i got it from this http://ufolab.info/revelation-23-1-main.htm website under the first link

now before anyone goes telling me i'm a nut for believing it, i'm not, just found it through stumble, and just got the idea on the early atom bomb from it

forget Tesla

alot of his theorie do not work
like X-ray not made radiation burn on skin, but by Ozone !
and he hatet Einstein Einstein's relativity theorie

magnificent mathematical garb which fascinates, dazzles and makes people blind to the underlying errors. The theory is like a beggar clothed in purple whom ignorant people take for a king..., its exponents are brilliant men but they are metaphysicists rather than scientists...

take Marie Curie instatt
She was a pioneer in the field of radioactivity.
is possble that she discover nuclear fission (OTL by Otto Hahn in 1938)

but there is a gruesome alternativ to A-Bomb: the radiological bomb
http://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Dirty_bomb

a explosive shell filled with caesium-137, fired by howitzer
on impact its explode, disperse deadly radioactive material over a large area

This alternativ give you alrady in 1929 nuclear warfare and later in 1940s the A-bomb.
