Nuclear Terrorism

now I watching a program on the TV, and the head of the US's task-force on nuclear terrorism was talking about how Al-Qaeda has never wanted a dirty bomb and has been after a real little boy/fat man type bomb, so what if such a weapon was set off by Al-Qaeda (or a sister group) in NYC?

An extreme crackdown on terrorist leaders and known training sites. Think raids the scale of when Osama was killed regardless of the country. Yemen, Saudi Arabia, Iran, Pakistan, Somalia. Pretty much every terrorist with a known location will be taken out.

god that is a bad thought..

the consequences would be pretty much a police state world in very short order... very ugly and very nasty

And thats if the Middle East is lucky if not... didn't someone post a story a few months ago were terrorists use nuclear artillery shells in three US cities and a US boomer sub goes rouge launches all but two of its missiles at the region and wipes most of its major cities off the map.

Problem with nukes is that every reactor in the world has a signature, similar by type of design, but utterly unique in specifics. These are pretty much all known by all the major powers thanks to fallout patterns, air sampling after even below ground testings, etc.

You use a weapon and the world knows, down to the reactor location, exactly where it came from. That point of origin will have some 'spainin to do. If it is from a stolen device every country on Earth will start turning over rocks to find the doers, they would far too dangerous for even the most radical state to let them run loose (if for no other reason than the hosting state becomes a target for retaliation). If it ISN'T from a stolen device, then God have mercy on whoever supplied it.

I'm thinking either an extra batshit crazy Kim Jong IIl or a device stolen while being transported from an ex SSR to Russia so it can be deactivated.

given the reaction from the government and military in OTL to 9/11 (Gitmo, black sites, rendition, torture, Iraq) thats not all that out there

You could easily put this thread in future history... likely the not too distant future either... between North Korea and Iran, something's gonna slip between the cracks.

well it seems that Osama bin Laden and Ayman al-Zawahiri had a meeting with Pakistani nuclear scientist who drew them a curd bomb design a month before 9/11.... so yeah

A nuke in a major American city? Chaos. Major discrimination against Islamic citizens if it is the doing of Muslim radicals. Millions of deaths. Yet more involvement in the Middle East. If a country supplied the bomb to the terrorists, the U.S. will bitchslap them to the eighth ring of hell. Note that the eighth ring of hell consists solely of dead rodents, Charlie Sheen, and Best Korea.

For ultimate sheer awkwardness though the winner, after it being a US weapon, would have to be if it was as Israeli nuclear device that they'd somehow lost or had stolen. Be interesting to see how you accuse a country that you've spent the last decade or two studiously ignoring and denying their nuclear weapons program and capabilities. You could even get a two for one deal as it's widely suspected that early Israeli nuclear devices from the 60s may have been made with stolen US highly enriched uranium, it's originally identified as a US device only a month or two later for it to emerge that it was actually Israeli. The recriminations and back and forth would insane.

The two classics on the subject I’ve always thought were Frederick Forsyth’s The Fourth Protocol and The Fifth Horseman by Larry Collins and Dominique Lapierre.
