In Febuary of 1939, Soviet spies learned about nuclear experiments in the Third Reich and the United States. Stalin, seeing the potential for a great weapon against possible enemies, began a secret program known as Свет проекта (Project Light)--which received considerable funding. Working deep in Siberia, Свет проекта began experimenting and testing nuclear devises.
(WW2 starts and things continue mostly as they did in our timeline--exept Stalin raised Свет проекта's funding in response to the German invasion--up to the battle of Stalingrad.)
As the Germans press into the city of Stalingrad in the November of 1945, Свет проекта successfully detonates a nuclear device in the wastes of Siberia. As a desperate plan, the Soviets plants one of the devices in the heart of Stalingrad and quietly evacuated the city overnight. When the German forces were fully in the city, the device was detonated. The entire German force, and Stalingrad with it, was wiped away in a firey scorch. Soviet soldiers witnessing the event called it адская бомба (Hell Bomb).
Moral broke among the German lines, and the Soviet Union's armies were pushing back the now disorganized German lines. By the time the Germans could get their act together, the Soviets had pushed to the border.
As the Soviets pushed into Poland, they found the death camps the Third Reich had built. As revenge, they began dropping the адская бомба on German cities (and about 4 on Berlin). At this time, the British, Canadians, and Americans were able to land in Normandy. By the end of 1943, the Soviets had wiped over most of Europe, and left most of Germany a pile of nuclear ruble. By 1944, Japan had suffered the same fate. There was no other way to put it, the Soviets were dominant over basically all of Eurasia.
