Not the Belgian Congo

Suppose the Congo in Africa had not become a colony of Belgium during the reign of King Leopold II.
What other country might have had an interest in the Congo?

Portugal wanted it, and had at least some British support.

The French also wanted it (one reason why the British supported Portugal and the Leopold).

I could see Congo being partitioned between Britain, France, Portugal and perhaps Germany. Today's Congo as we know it, the result of a Belgian artificial construct, therefore doesn't exist and the Congolese are probably better off because of that.
