Not Really a Map Challenge

Good points, Kaiser, especially re Java. I hadn't taken into consideration the population differential.

Hmm. Given the way this map is, I'd expect a PoD in the 1970s at the latest. Otherwise, as has been pointed out upthread, why aren't Italy, Ireland, Spain etc in the EU?

For a PoD in the 1970s, how about having the Yom Kippur War being a more dramatic Israeli victory? For instance, deploying their reserves to the Golan Heights a day or two earlier would have made an even bigger mess of the attacking Syrian forces. There's a good argument that it was the (relative) success of the Arab nations which allowed them to feel less humiliated and thus to the Camp David Accords and (relative) peace between Israel and the Arab nations since. Without this, as also mentioned upthread, things could continue to get quite ugly, with wars in the Middle East every decade or so.

And also, I'd also suggest some minor amendments to the map. Viz, I really can't see Australia holding down Java. As of today, it has about 127 million inhabitants and Australia has 20 million, and the percentages are only likely to be further in Java's favour by 2090. Ye gods, occupying something like that would be a challenge. Maybe India could do it, but Australia... I rather doubt it. I also suspect that if Australia has been grabbing territory off Indonesia, Irian Jaya would be on the list as well. Certainly ahead of Java.
India might also seek Bali....

Does the map infer that an independent Rhodesia merges into South Africa. But Botswanana is South African too...Are we looking at a 1940's POD?

I'd prefer if at all possible not to have one that early, and I'm more than willing to change the situation in South Africa if needs be. Like I said, I didn't really have a POD in mind, only a place where I wanted to end up. Granted, its hard for you guys to really be efficient when you don't know the exact state of current affairs, but the Camp David POD has definite potential.

You wanted Haig as President, so:
J. Carter D 1977-1985
G. Bush R 1985-1993 (unless incapacitated)
A. Haig R 1993-2001 (Or, 198X-1997?)

Quite possibly, it was just Java which really struck me. Although what if India and Australia decide to divide things on the Wallace Line, which at least makes biogeographical sense... ;)

Come to that, it's odd that Namibia is independent but Rhodesia/Botswana aren't. There's probably ways that could happen, but I'd be intrigued as to what they are...

I'd suggest that simply bypassing the Camp David accords is difficult, because the underlying willingness of Egypt to reach an accomodation with Israel pre-dated those accords, and was mostly due to the (comparatively) better Egyptian performance during the Yom Kippur War. Mucking about with either that war or the lead-up to it is probably a more promising area.

For some reason Eisenhower keeps coming to mind when I look at this map, but I don't know why...especially when it comes to that Western Slavia...
