No Turning Back
"With the power of seigneurs behind them Quebec provided a reasonable amount of supplies and men to the American cause. However, there was no turning back now, everyone knew that. It was only a matter of time."
-Turned Upside Down: A History of the American Revolution by Colonel Tara Winchester USMC (Ret.), Falcon Press, Quebec City, 2000.
As spring continued, Washington headed south to confront the British in New York. The British, meanwhile were trying to think up ways of recapturing Acadia and Quebec. On April 17th 1776, the third battle of Fort Cumberland took place. This time, however, the rebels turned the British back. At the second battle of Montreal that happened on April 23rd, the rebels were forced to abandon the city only to recapture it on April 25th.
This was all watched with earnest in Europe where Britain's enemies, France and Spain in particular, wanted to do something to weaken Britain. However, they couldn't as they viewed the conflict as a civil war. That was about to change.
