Well, America would have a more distinctive national symbol; on the other hand, what would Turkey's national bird be? ;)
 
Um... Turkeys don't actually originate from Turkey or have anything to do with it... the name comes out of traditional European tendency to name anything exotic after any random exotic place.

Examples:
"Indians" in North America
"Turkey" (bird or meat), also called "d'Inde" or "indian" in French, found in North America (nowhere near Turkey or India)
"Guinea Pig," also called "cochon d'Inde" or "indian pig" in French, found in South America (nowhere near Guinea or India)
