Nostradamus was wrong

On July 1, 1559, at the Place des Vosges in Paris, during a match to celebrate the Peace Treaty of Cateau-Cambrésis with his longtime enemies, the Habsburgs of Austria and to celebrate the marriage of his daughter Elizabeth of Valois to King Philip II of Spain, King Henry was mortally wounded by a sliver from the shattered lance of Gabriel Montgomery, captain of the King's Scottish Guard. It penetrated the closed visor, pierced his left eye, penetrated the brain and came out via his ear. He suffered terribly, and, despite the efforts of royal surgeon Ambroise Paré, died on July 10, 1559 and was buried in a cadaver tomb in Saint Denis Basilica.

Then some other historical event would have "proved" to Nostradamus' supporters that he really could see into the future. :p If I remember correctly, he already had the superstitious queen's confidence before the supposed prophecy happened.

The thing that annoys me about Nostradamus is that he never predicts anything useful - like the multi-million dollar lotto numbers... :D

Yes, but if he could see the future and predicted it, everyone would play the numbers, and you'd get whopping 1.61$ for all the numbers right that day.

But it would at least prove he could foretell the future. There's that at least ;)

Plus it's $1.61 more than what I've got now :D

I've always been told by people who claim to "predict" the future that it is wrong to do so for personal gain...hence no predictions for next week's lottery or the winner of the 3.30 at Newmarket. Unfortunately, the same prohibition seems to apply even when I swear not to give them a penny and so let them live in genteel poverty while i live it up.

If I were a sceptic, I might think they weren't being exactly honest about their abilities.

Is anyone going to talk about the effects on the situation in France and the rest of Europe?

I didn't think that was what you were aiming for, I thought you meant to discuss Nostradamus, to be honest...;)

But in that case, looking at his (the king's) policy against the Huguenot reformed protestants as compared to Charles IX's policy, they both seem much alike. I doubt the french protestants should expect any leniancy.

What if he tries to manipulate events to make it appear as though his prophecies were coming true?

Could we please drop it? This reminds me of that time when I posted a challenge involving a Turco-Polish war and everybody started talking about goddamn Russia.

July 10, 1559: French king Henry II doesn't die in a jousting tournament.
July 11, 1559: Nostradamus falls from a flight of stairs and dies a horrible and agonizing death.

There, problem solved.

Bump!

Probably less influence of Catherine over the future kings, because she wouldn't be regent. The power of the Guise family grew a lot during this period, so they might not be so important in the future. Also, maybe he could marry his son Charles to another bride instead of Anna of Austria, due to some differences in his foreign relations. Then Charles could have a chance of have a healthy son (he had only one ill daughter with Anna, but Charles of Valois, his illegitimate son with his mistress, lived 73 years). It would avoid the Bourbon succession, with many consequences in the War of Religion.

Actually, Nostradamus had a loathing of stairs, as proven by Quatrain XXIII, and would only walk on the ground floor. So that's just ASB!
