Northern secession

Okay, so this is a version where the North secedes before the South in the American Civil War. What happens is this: Harriet Tubman doesn't get sick and is able to go to Harper's Ferry with John Brown. When they get there, she and several others are able to persuade him to briefly retreat and come back later. So, two weeks later, John Brown launches his raid. With more preperations and men, he actually manages to take Harper's Ferry. Over the course of six months or so, John Brow takes over several other places with similar weapons caches. Eventually, he gets enough weapons and supporters to fulfill his master plan: an emancipated country in the Appalachians, that he imaginatively calls Appalachia. He's smart enough to group his people in the northern most part of the mountain range. The South demands that the North aid them in removing John Brown, but they refuse. Northern states, begining with Maine, secede.
Eventually, all of the non slave states secede. The South, glad to have "those stupid Yankees" off their backs, let them. The North buys Maryland, Washington DC, and the rights to the American flag and the name USA. The South names Jefferson Davis their temporary president until they can draft a Constitution and name New Orleans as their capital. (Should they become the United Confederacy of Dixie, or just the Confederate States of America?) Six months later, the North finally remembers to tell California what happened. California, upset at being forgotten and over the North's secession, creates their own country, the Republica of California with San Fransisco as their capital. California goes on to buy Baja from Mexico, the Oregon and Utah territories from the US, and the area that becomes Arizona from the Confederacy. The United States buys Ontario and Quebec from Britain, and then adds the states of Dakota, Nebrasaka, and Montanta. The South buys Cuba and Puerto Rico from Spain, Jamaica from Britain, Kansas and Indian territory from the United States, and Chihuaha, Coahuila, Neuvo Leon, and Tamaulipas from Mexico. Please note any problems or ideas. Thanks!

About California... California is a pretty big thing to forget.

And even if they had "forgotten", there's no gaurantee that Cali would have left too. it would still be in the US. The scenario seems implausible, but interesting.

Yeah its very 'out there' but interesting, i always like the idea of Balkanizing the US as an ATL even if its only slightly :D

Where does these successor States find money to buy all this land?

No way will the UK sell Ontario and Quebec either...

Can't see the CSA agreeing to sell Maryland either, not to mention that the population of Maryland would be livid at being the subject of horse-trading and may have to be violently pacified...

Interesting - not really sure this version of a northern secession is plausible but sounds like a lot of fun. I'd suggest that you drop the idea of so many purchases; if you retain any, find reasons for the 'current owners' to sell.

I love the idea of a 'forgotten' California going it alone!

Don't be deterred, go ahead and develop the story.

I didn't literally mean buy the rights. I simply mean, they bribe the south so that the south won't use the name United States of America. And maybe you're right about Canada. But quite frankly, Mexico was essentially broke at this time. Maybe they wouldn't sell quite so many states, but I think they'd do quite a bit for enough money. And the Confederacy was going to buy Cuba in the real world anyway. But I still need some advice: should the South be the Confederate States of America, or the United Confederacy of Dixie?
