non communist, no alinged country Cold War Eastern Europe

What if a country in Eastern Europe does not become communist/socialist/leninist/marxist after WW2 but behind the Iron curtain ? Would be most likely authorithan, though.

Albania may have been able to, and arguably once it became Chinese aligned it was non-aligned in the European context. China wasn't going to go to war over its defence.

Behind Iron Curtain? That does not sounds plousible. Iron Curtain was tetm for Warsaw Pact countrise. Otherwise yes.

Czechoslovakia have president Beneš take earth nap earlier (which he deserves ) and you might have non aligned country.

Finland is technically "Eastern Europe" and fits the bill of being non-communist, non aligned, and generally closer to the Soviet orbit (militarily at least) out of necessity. The Iron Curtain however did never really extend there.
I don't think this what the OP had in mind.

Had Mussolini never been stupid enough to attack Greece, and it is very possible that he might not have, as he did so against the advice of his generals, WW2 never would have spread there, as the Germans had no need for Greece in terms of securing their flank for Barbarossa.

If this happens, and Greece stays neutral, post WW2 you likely get the monarchy still in place and not needing NATO protection, as the Communists benefited from the war more than any faction.

Yes, "behind the Iron Curtain" and "non-aligned" are really mutually exclusive. We can well think of a theoretical Warsaw Pact country that does not have a Communist system but instead a parliamentary republic dominated by leftist parties. Unlikely but IMHO possible, at least for some years or even a few decades, say with Czechoslovakia or with Finland. Under such circumstances, the parliamentary system would probably not be very functional as the Soviets would have the leverage to keep chipping away at it through Moscow-sponsored Communist groups, etc.

I could see that such country could install fence.
After all Socialist policies would ruin country and after while average incomes would drop. Then people would like to emigrate but state would loose income form its tax subjects hence the fence.

I do not even see reason why it would need to that much of Authotarian system. Even democraticly elected leaders could make big mess.

BTW:
IRS is adancing plan that if you "own" more then 50 000USD on taxes they would confiscate your passport...

Such system could be advanced further that you would need "Exit Visa" to leave country another step is then fence... And then you imporve said fence.

Fence is only two steps away..

What about a [less or non] communist Yugoslavia? By the way, Tito was friendlier with non and anti communists, and most of the communists he preferred were from the Third World or western friendly and less communist [Marxist-Leninist] than expected.
