No Watergate

Nixon ends the war in Vietnam, is the first american president to travel to China and Russia. There is no Watergate-scandal. He does not resign over it.
Another second term is most sure....

He had already been elected to his second term, but without Watergate he would have served it out. As a result, Jimmie Carter is not elected instead another Republican runs, maybe Gerald Ford or Bob Dole. Ronald Reagon is never elected, and the middle in American politics is not abandoned by either party.

Ronald Reagon is never elected

Why not?

He will need to win the Republican nomination by 1984 though. After that he is simply too old.

Personally I think Gerald Ford was a decent president. However being appointed by Nixon was the political kiss of death. Without Nixon's impeachment Gerald Ford could serve 2 full terms as president, and do just fine.

Nixon ending Vietnam

I don't understand this talk about Nixon ending Vietnam. He was expanding the War into Loas and Cambodia with secreat bombings. And while he might have passed a national health care bill, we forget too about his parania and how he wanted to know everything about everyone... kind of like the NSA under George Bush.

Do you see any way a Nixon No Watergate scenario leads to a victory for the Democrats in 1980? That is after whichever GOP who is elected in 1976 is blamed for stagflation.

Also, we invade Iran if they take our hostages under Ford/Dole?

Nixon won his second term in 1972, he can't run for a third. Now as to what happens to the GOP with the hapless Gerald Ford elected in 1976...

IIRC, Reagan made a pretty solid bid for the Presidency in the primaries in '79, but lost to Ford.... without Watergate (and presumably, the Agnew resignation/conspiracy thing), Ford would be a nobody.... Reagan might win....

Do you mean 1976? Reagan won in 1980 against Carter.

Nixon ends vietnam on the same terms as Korea(split vietnam). That and the 60s/70s cultural revolution conitnues into the 80s

He did that in OTL...

What's your reasoning behind that?

1 I'm talking about backing up the peace with some force

2 No Reagan. Ford likely gets elected in and with the impending economci issues a democrat gets elected in 1980 and Reagan is a nonentiy

Are you saying that Reagan single-handedly killed the counterculture movement? It was pretty much dead before that.

His administration would still be a bit tarnished due to the shadey characters that worked closely with him (Halderman, Dean, Mitchell, Agnew and etc..) and due to the "dirty tricks" that were employed by them. Agnew still resigns in October 1973 and Ford then becomes VP. But Ford will most likely not run for president in 76 with Nixon still as President. Ford indicated as much when Nixon choose him as VP. John Connolly will likely be the frontrunner for the Republican nomination in 76 with a strong challenge coming from Ronald Reagan. Connolly was Nixon's choice for 76 and his other choice for VP.
