No Watergate. US Healthcare & the Future of the Republican Party

I just reached my health care plan's $3000 deductible for the year. Now the health insurance company will pay 80% until December 31!

Thought I seen a discussion touching on this, but can't find it.

As it says on the boxtop; does no Watergate scandal allow a large scale health care program to be in place before the end on Nixons second term? Either way what is the likely future of the Republican party? I am thinking the conservative movement still occurs, but will it go as far with Nixons term and reputation intact, and would the bogeyman of 'Socialized Medicine' fuel the conservative/Libertarian movement though the 1970s & 80s?

I am thinking yes, but have not sorted what are butterflies & what is inevitable trend.

It's half of what you need. Nixon was on board for national health care. Wilbur Mills had the votes lined up and was drafting the bill before the Fanny Fox event happened. So change two events, and we have national health care. Maybe just change Fanny Foxe since if Mills get its out of the house, then we just basically have the Senate hurdle. IMO, either a weak Nixon or a Ford would sign the bill if it came to their desk with decent support in the house or senate.

If there was a time to do it, it would be before healthcare costs both on the treatment side and the research side exploded, and I think the 1970s were still in that window for it being feasible.

The principle of it actually wasn't a big issue; after all, Medicare is essentially a state run healthcare system (and you can argue over whether it is run efficiently or if the treatment is the best, but that is what it is).

healthcare costs in countries with UHC are less than half the OTL US's even after the exploision though

my guess for latest feasiable/politically possible would be 93-94 under cuomo/some other non clinton dem or sometime 1997-2005 in an atl where bush wins a second term and we get a dem in 96 with a new realignment
