I guess we are technically talking about a pre 1900 POD here but I am interested in the after 1900 consequences.
I am looking for a POD where the OTL United States splinter/never unite. And there is no later unification, instead the cultural, political, legal, military and economic differences between the different American states grow.
The USA seem inevitable to us IOTL, a similiar "culture" of the colonists, a common enemy in Great Britain and the need for a centralized state make some sort of federal state seem inevitable.
So is there a way that this never happens? Single States go their own way, more localized Unions of States happen but never the "wider" Federation of OTL.
What would be realistic states in OTLs U.S territory?
And most importantly: How would the modern (after 1900) world look with a "balkanized" USA.?
Or is a reunion inevitable, given the pressures of modern international politics and statehood?
