No United States = Imperial/Colonial World?

Or the colonies could end up like Algeria. Mass immigration of wealthy Europeans tends to anger the native population when they start to become treated as second class citizens. Although this is more likely for Africa than the Americas.
Which leads into horrible, cruel bloodshed that needs to be prevented at all cost.

Also, what some are forgetting is that while there was a more socialist trend in Europe, it wasn't until the WWs that war and much of the previous thinking and national pride were discredited that Europeans started being so far left.

Well, call me a cockeyed optimist but I think before thousands of years go by reasonable heads would prevail and the political elites of Europe would realize that the costs of such permanent conflict would outweigh the benefit.

Also, asides from the unacceptability to the European public of any kind of reconquest-by-depopulation in the twentieth century, let's keep in mind a huge part of the economic rationale for colonialism is the idea of a captive marketplace for the exports of the colonizing power. Even apart from that, plantations and mines in the colonies require the labor of colonized peoples. So asides from the whole evil factor, there's the fact that empty colonies remove much of that economic rationale. Certainly, independent countries with ongoing economic relations to the colonial metropole is preferable to the empty real estate.

Also, considering the way most colonial guerilla wars have gone in the twentieth century, I don't think a European victory in such a conflict would be at all obvious. In fact, if anyone ever wanted to write a "Mao-wank" timeline (the phrase alone makes me want to wash my brain), this would set the stage for it.

If you have what amounts to a global on again off again race war, then you would have a massive war where Europe would slowly but surely start loosing friendly ports to natives while the natives slowly but surely lose the ability to send hundreds of million to their death. Massive and stupefyingly bloody war hardens Humanity and teaches them the lesson of Enforced Sovereignty. Expect a long a eternal war in which billions die over mere decades. For thousands of years!
