No Thomas Paine in ARW

What if Thomas Paine decided to stay in Britain, or some other POD that keeps him out of the colonies without affecting England that much?

Common Sense is never written, neither is the Crisis. What affects do this have on the early US? Are we even born? Does this affect the government that is formed?

I think American independence would still have come in July 1776. America was on the fast track to independence at that time anyway. Yes Thomas Paine and "Common Sense" swayed a lot of Americans to the side of independence and that was a factor, but it wasn't the whole story.

It might not have been quite as easy without Thomas Paine's "Common Sense," but I still think it would have come because America was on a fast track to independence by 1776 anyway, and I think it would have come at or very close to the time it did in OTL.

That was Patrick Henry how said "Give me liberty or give me death." Thomas Paine said "These are the times that try men's soul".

I think that without Paine, the ARW would have taken longer. Paine was very important in shaping the future of the United States.

Indeed, I would go farther and argue that without Paine...and especially THE CRISIS...the American Revolution might have died in the winter of 1776. Washington's army might very well have melted away completely without the inspiration of Paine's words.
