No Spanish Armada

In 1588 the Spanish Armada set sail from Spain to invade England after the execution of Mary, Queen of Scots.
Suppose there was no Spanish Armada. What happens then?

From the top of my head: The Church of England would be far less anti-catholic and may well fall back into mainstream Catholicism after Elisabeth's death. After all, it was the threat of Spanish Catholics invading that made the English feel that Catholic = foreign = anti-British.

Unfortunately that would require Phillip II to be a different person. The man was totally convinced that it was his duty to depose his former sister-in-law. In fact the man was just totally convinced of many things, including the fact that he had the right to do what he did. He was a strange, religious, obsessive kind of bloke.

ASB. The Thirty-Nine articles had been adopted in 1563 and they were very much Protestant in doctrine. (Note, for example, articles XXV, XXVIII and XXIV.) Also, Foxe's Book of Martyrs had been in print for a quarter-century and there had been a copy in every church for some time. The threat of Spanish invasion may have exacerbated anti-Catholic feeling but was not the origin of it. By 1588, the only way the Church of England returns to Catholicism is through some kind of Catholic conquest. It will not simply "fall back" on its own at this point.

The purpose of the Armada was firstly to enable the huge army of the Duke of Parma to cross in safety from France to England.
Having accomplished this, the Armada's second objective was to wipe out the English fleet.

So the main consequence of the Armada sailing was that England was now under direct threat from a foreign force other than the Scotts. Probably for the first time since the war of the roses.

So would no Armada mean the English still think everything on the other side of the Channel is not their concern and rather go on infighting with the Scotts for another century or so

But remember that Elizabeth was succeeded by James VI of Scotland, himself a Protestant...

For the armada to not be built so large you need to have less piracy in the atlantic so the Spanish state doesn't have the incentive to waste resources on the inefficient convoy system.
Without the convoy system/establishment of the armada and preferably a Netherlands that remains a part of Spain(Perhaps Philip isn't such a bigot as otl) and I can see a Spain that doesn't go bankrupt so soon, have a lot more funds and resources for its wars in Europe and stable economically. Plus you could than see more development of the latin American countries since more capital will be available for the crown to build up pumps and machines for ramping up production of silver from the mine sin Mexico and Potosi in Peru. Perhaps one can also see a development of the Argentian region so that the transportation of silver becomes much easier since shipping it by sea from Buenos aires to Seville is much cheaper than the route whereby ships stop near Panama and go through the carrabian. Finally with access to the Netherlands, Spain will have a solid manufacturing and mercantile/commercial sector and I could see the Hapsburgs retaining their status as the premier power of Europe.
