Let's say, for whatever reason, Japan avoids the slide into militarism in the 1930s, and there is no invasion of Manchuria, no First Battle of Shanghai, and no total war in China. (The reason why falls outside the scope of this discussion.) Absent the war, and with no need to appease a Chinese ally, how long does the Treaty-Port System last? Is it ended before widespread decolonialization? Does it last longer? How long do the concessions last, and how are they finally ended?
