No Second Great Awakening?

Around 1820-1840 there was an explosion in religiosity across the United States. The number of protestant preachers in the US exploded, creating a cross class movement for a new moralisim in the union.
this movement went on spur other submovements such as religious abolitionism, temperance, Mormanism, Manifest Destiny, etc..

so what if it never occured? what if the US kept its Dieist/Catholic/Anglican make up going forward?

Each wave of immigrants brought their own religious heritage along with them (more or less...). That likely means that the northern US is more religiously diverse than the south. In that 1820-1840 timeframe, the Irish were the single largest group of immigrants, followed by Germans and English, so there's a heavier lean towards Catholicism. The nativists would push back against that increased Catholic presence and the fear of the power of the Pope.....

Conversely, on the frontiers, if there's no great awakening movement, wouldn't it be likely to see umpteen localized variations on theology? And with that variation, less of a religious impact on everyday life?

Well the Victorian era will look very different without the moral crusading that was a cultural offshoot of the Awakening. I think the temperance movement would almost certainly be stillborn.
