No Sartre

I was just reading a bit about existentialism. Sartre was in the french army in 1940 after being drafted, but wasn´t in combat. He got arrested for a while, used his arrest to start writing one of his main philosophical treatises and then got pretty famous internationally after the war.

If he for some reason got himself killed by nazi´s before that is there anyone that might replace him as a philosophical cultural icon? And did Sartre´s writing on existentialism have any significance historically, that is change anything?
