One possibility would be for the Church to take on Martin Luther's suggestions and as in Kingsley Amis's The Alteration he is made Pope and the reformation takes place internally. If the Pope had granted Henry V111 s wishes England would have remained on board and the reformation might have been limited to Scandinavia and parts of northern Europe. The Luther's time the church had become riddled with corruption and there had been rival Popes the involvement of the Borgia's it was probably beyond reform. Maybe if it had initially interpreted the advice about rendering unto Caeser etc in a better manner. However even without the reformation there would still have been the split with the orthodox churches.
Possibly if the clash with the Islamic world had been greater andthe Caliphate had been less tolerant with Christians it may have launched another crusade uniting christendom.
