What if there were no private armies in Nazi Germany? By that I mean no Waffen-SS, no Herman Goering divisions, no Luftwaffe Infantry divisions, and the Volkssturm is under the command of the German army instead of Goebbels and the Propaganda Ministry, while the Hitler Youth military training and recruiting into the armed forces is handled by the Wehrmacht.
The Fallschirmjäger and Marines are still under the Luftwaffe and Kriegsmarine respectively.
How does this affect the war? All of the ground forces would be under the German army rather than dispersed throughout several different private armies under different Nazi personalities. Private industrial fiefdoms to support these different ground forces would not pop up, so the German army’s supply and production is large and more concentrated than OTL. There is no favoritism here, unlike OTL where Goering’s and Himmler’s troops were given priority in fancy new gear like the Tiger tanks. Instead the army properly trains the OTL mis-utilized manpower of Germany. The Waffen-SS was notorious for taking too heavy of losses, especially early in the war, because of lack of proper training and leadership. The Luftwaffe Infantry divisions also had the same problem, as large amounts of trained mechanics and ground crews were not properly trained and wasted as infantry instead of being evaluated and properly placed through the Germany army replacement system; specifically the trained mechanics are used for Panzer and mechanized units instead of wasted as infantry, while the men used as infantry replacements are adequately trained and integrated into existing units with experienced leaders, instead of created as separate and completely inexperienced units with no competency as infantry.
Obviously this would not mean that Germany wins or even comes close, but there would be significant changes to the war, as Germany is much more efficient in this scenario both in the use of her manpower and industry, which here isn’t split between multiple armies that duplicate effort and don’t take advantage of economies of scale.
Also it deprives the Nazis of their ideological army, so this will have its own set of butterflies, as the National Socialism is forced to rely on the traditional army instead of its own ideological, politically reliable force.
