No President Nixon, does it change the nature of the VP

Prior to 1960 sitting VPs did not usually run unless they had succeeded into office and in the 19th century often not even then.

Had there been something to stop Nixon running would that have made the VP office less of a stepping stone?

The process was already beginning to change at around this time, with younger politicians trying to position themselves onto the ticket in order to promote realistic down-the-track presidential runs. Stassen is a good example of this new trend in the forties, a time when otherwise an ambitious VP still looked like an old man without much hope of ever getting the top job (Alben Barkly).

Anyway, Nixon going down over Checkers would have meant his replacement on the ticket by Senator William Knowland, so that's one of history's great PoDs that aren't necessarily monumental in nature.

Say JFK and LBJ still win in 60. JFK is not murdered. LBJ would have ran in 68. It was his dream to be President. Same thing with first Bush Sooner or later a VEEP is going to run.
