No Presdent Nixon, international consequences

If Nixon had been defeated by Humphrey in 1968 what are the consequences

1) I am guessing it at least potpones the improvement in US China relations, does this have big consequences in China itselt?

2) How would Humphrey rlate to Breznef?

3) I am assuming that the Vietnam war ends earlier, also with the North essentially taking over.

4) Would Humphrey have been as hostile to Allende's Chile?

It would not. Humphrey was going to go to China, too.

2) How would Humphrey rlate to Breznef?
Probably as good or better than Nixon. Not sure if he would actually meet with him.

Expect the boys to be out, but air support to remain. There's a chance the South survives, because a Democratic President can keep money flowing, but he might rush it and fuck up.

4) Would Humphrey have been as hostile to Allende's Chile?
No. Allende will be handicapped without unleashing the neoliberal monster.

Where did you learn that?

I did a very superficial google of Humphrey and China, I didn't find much but then again I didn't look very hard at all.

In 1960, HHH said, "I happen to believe that the most dangerous, aggressive force in the world today is Communist China." ( http://www.senate.gov/artandhistory/history/common/generic/VP_Hubert_Humphrey.htm ) I know that that was 1960, and eight years is a long time in politics.

The other reference I found was in the context of a call between HHH and President Nixon in 1972, http://whitehousetapes.net/transcript/nixon/005-002

President Nixon: Yeah. I just want you to know, Hubert, that as you can imagine, whether it’s arms control or China and also in this area, there are things going on that may not meet the eye.

For what it's worth, that call was Nixon thanking HHH for putting down accusations made by Ted Kennedy that Nixon was deliberately timing the end of the Vietnam War to coincide with re-election efforts.

I don't know if it ended up confirming anything for HHH's views on China either way.

Please let me know where you got that information about HHH and China.

"Only Nixon could go to China". Nixon was a hard-line anti-Communist. If he said we needed to open relations with China, then even the hard-line anti-communists had to listen. This has big consequences, not just for China, but for the world, as Nixon's visit was the beginning of the end of the Cold War.
