King James tends to be remembered for the standard English language protestant bible although he merely commissioned it. However his more lasting contribution to history was to plant Scottish settlers in Ulster as a means of pacification of rebellious Irishmen. However what if he didn't?

The first difference in history mifght have occured when James 11 landed in Ireland and sought to regain the British throne but fgrom the mid nineteenth century onwards there would have been vast differences. The 1798 rebellion may well have occured despite it being protestant led as its leaders were largely not from Ulster and it was not exclusively protestant led. There would still have been protestant in Ireland but largely belonging to the Ango-Irish landowning classes and some of them took part in the War of Indpendence but no planting off settlers would have meant no massive resistance to home rule, no split in the Liberal Party and probably no War of Indpendence
