The Nyköping Banquet was an event in 1317, where King Birger of Sweden imprisoned his two brothers and then let them starve to death in the prison. The following year, king Birger lost the power in a coup and went into exile in Denmark, while his son was killed. After an interregnum, his nephew, Magnus, the son of one of the brothers who had died and in the prison, became the new king. The three year old Magnus had just two months earlier become king of Norway after the death of his maternal grandfather, Haakon V of_Norway. So, what if king Birger had never imprisoned his brothers? Would he have avoided a coup against him and remained king of Sweden, and would his son have become the next king of Sweden? How would this have affected intra-Scandinavian developments? King Birgers brother, Eric (the father of the next Swedish king) had managed to take control of not only Western Sweden, but also areas that were then part of Norway. Could one see the development of a fourth Scandinavian kingdom? Or maybe Eric´s "Middle Nordic" empire would merge with Norway once Eric´s son inherited both his father´s land and the throne of Norway?
