Could the atomic bomb plan have gone wrong when the reactor was under Chicago's stadium, thus wiping out the research team and poisoning the area and making the administration think it was not much of a great idea after all?

Easily. IIRC their 'safety control' consisted of a guy standing on top of the reactor pile with a bucket of barium solution to dump into the reactor should anything go wrong. I'm pretty sure that even beats Chernobyl for the "Golden Toilet of Nuclear Safety" award...
