No Mughals

 since everyone on this site has such a good understanding of Indian history, here's a WI: what if the Mughals never created an empire in India, they were stopped somehow before then. what would take their place?

I was being sarcastic.. from my (limited) understanding of this site's society, it seems that many people are relatively ignorant of Indian history. :p

but I'm not insulting anyone. because i need some help.

No insult taken, as I certainly am

However, that's never stopped me from posting before, so why should it start now?

How about the British as a sub for the Mughals? In OTL the Company was moving in to India at about the same time as the Mughals (1600's) wasn't it? How would they deal with what seems mainly Persians?

In the absence of strong Mughals, we might see the Sultanate of Delhi flexing its muscle in India. I don't rightly now how much stamina Sher Shah had as an empire-builder, but he certainly was a credible rival to the Mughals for a time. Would a relative power vacuum in the Punjab/Khyber area be enough to tempt the Safavids to meddle, too?

Hmmm - Ottoman-allied Delhi against the Safavids?

Are we too late to save Vijayanagar?

Well, the Delhi Sultanate was on its way out when the Mughals appeared in OTL.

And without the Mughals, odds are that the fragmenting Delhi Sultanate would not be united again.

During the 14th century, several independant sultanates had emerged, like the Sultanate of Bengal, the Sultanate of Gujarat, and the Bahmani Sultanate - and if these states aren't united by a new Muslim empire, then India will become politically a lot more divided as a result.

Are we too late to save Vijayanagar?

Vijayanagar could still be saved, allthough that depends on how the butterflies of no Mughal empire affects the Bahmani Sultanate and its successor states, the Deccan Sultanates.

With a little luck, Vijayanagar could make it.

might see a Hindu empire emerging in the post-Delhi India, although doubtfully the Mahratta. also the Bengalis and Persians might be more belligerent too
