No Monroe?

On the morning of the 26th of December, 1776, American forces under General George Washington attacked the Hessian garrison at Trenton, New Jersey, and managed to achieve a stunning victory which some had thought impossible.

During the fighting, Lieutenant James Monroe, who would go on to become the President of the United States from 1816 to 1824, was carried from the field, a musket ball having torn into his left shoulder, severing an artery.

Doctor John Riker, one of the American medical staff, was on the scene and was relatively quickly able to clamp the severed artery, saving Lieutenant Monroe.

What if it wasn't so? Dr. Riker was not present, perhaps, or was unable to get to Monroe in time. Who is elected in 1816? Does the Era of Good Feelings progress as IOTL? Does an equivalent to the Monroe Doctrine exist?

Being as it was John Q. Adams who invented the wording that became the doctrine, all butterflies aside something along the lines of it probably exists, yes. As do, butterflies willing the era of good feelings which had more to do with the collapse of the Federalists than the administration of Monroe. The main question though is without him will things develop the same way as per IOTL, his congressional race with Madison comes to mind as a key event in securing the passage of the bill of rights.

Oh, my god... is it possible? Riker was sent back in time with the Enterprise to avert a Monroe-less world? :D

...seriously, though, I'm not sure; the man was boring as fuck.

OTL, William H Crawford came a strong second in the party caucus, getting 54 votes to Monroe's 65, so butterflies permitting he may well be the nominee.

Any guesses on whether he makes JQA Secretary of stat, or goes for someone else? If he does, we still get the Doctrine, only now it will be the Crawford Doctrine. If not, I ain't got a clue.

But the real fun and games will of course be in 1824. Crawford, as the outgoing POTUS, won't be a candidate, so it's Jackson, Adams, Clay and maybe Calhoun. If Calhoun stays in the contest, can he push Clay into fourth place as Crawford did OTL? If not, then President Clay is a strong possibility.
