No Mongol Horde

In the year 1172 ten year old Temüjin, who grew up to unite the Mongols and conquer vast amounts of Asia as Genghis Kahn, was in a fight with his brother Bekhter over hunting spoils. The brothers and their mother were exiles living on their own off the land, hiding from their enemies. In the fight Temüjin killed his brother and this cemented his place as head of his family.

But what if instead Bekhter had killed Temüjin? What if no one ever united the tribes and led the Mongol hordes into the rest of Asia? What if there had never been a Mongol Empire?

POD: 1172. Temüjin killed by his brother in a brawl.

We already have a rather widely known TL, Chaos, that has No Genghis Khan as its POD.

For some general suggestions-exactly when the golden age of Muslim science and culture ended is a matter of debate, but the destruction of Samarkand, Bukhara, Baghdad, and the entire rest of the Middle East definately drove the nail into the coffin, plunging the Islamic world into a dark age from which, arguably, it never really recovered. IIRC, the most scientifically and culturally productive parts of the Muslim world by that time were Persia and Khorosan, which were also the areas worst affected by the Mongol invasion.

Kievan Rus will stick around longer. While it certainly won't be immortal, its quite probable that the center of gravity of "Russian" culture will stay in Ukraine, rather than shifting northward. Moscow almost certainly stays an unimportant garrison town.

In China, the Song and Jin dynasties will likely keep fighting each other until one eventually wins. Don't really know enough about Chinese history to say which one is the likely winner.

More generally, Genghis Khan was almost certainly responsible for millions, perhaps tens of millions, of deaths-more than anyone else prior to 1900. Lots and lots of major cities and cultural centers won't get burned to the ground in this TL. Its struck me that the only major region of Eurasia to be spared Mongol fires, really, was Europe, and while there were a lot of reasons for Europe's advancement over other Eurasian civilizations, I wouldn't be surprised if part of it wasn't Genghis Khan's hordes.

I also have a TL about that but it is about Temujin changing his mind in 1200..it is called The Will of the Diamond Emperor..

Thanks

I'd looked to see if I could find something like this POD.

Thanks for the info on the timelines.

Kasumigenz, I'll check out your timeline.

Mirza Kahn, do you have a link to that timeline you mentioned? Or at least a name?

Thanks.

One of the things you didn't mention, Mirza, was the lack of the Mongol Empire to facilitate the Venice Traders development of trade with China. I think that might cause big changes as far as the Renaissance and Age of Exploration.

I also wonder what effects no Mongols would have on the Ottomans, and thus on the end of Byzantium.

No Mongols=no Ottomans in an any recognizable form.
