Also US social mobility is fairly low among the developed world though I don't have the numbers handy.

Well, I'll be; we have a higher Gini coefficient than the USA?
 
Some clarification:
talking about "More elitist America" i don't speak of "evil empire" and less of ultra-liberist-turbo-capitalist America.
Ultra liberism is at the last destructive for elitism,because are the "better" to emerge.
So in a competitive ultra-liberist society, the son of "old money" family can loste all,and the son of farmer can become a rich tycon.
So for "elitist" America i don't mean the wet dream of a right wing repubblican,but a society more similar to those of old continent,like UK,Italy,Spain or France for the most of XX century.
