I think this is because elderly people are more conservative; Black American's are also fairly conservative, couple this with favorable policies...

Right, this is why I think they become a workers-rights labour party earlier in their history.

What are your thoughts on how political coalitions will look?

Here's another possibility: America gets a new social democratic party. The People's Party of the 1890s was fairly successful IOTL. It elected either directly or through fusion tickets (that is the same person running with multiple parties) 11 governors, 5 senators, and 40 congressmen.
Per Wikipedia:
"It was highly critical of capitalism, especially banks and railroads, and allied itself with the labor movement."
Maybe it would go on to replace the Democratic party like how in Britain the Labour party supplanted the Liberals.

Why wouldn't it merge with the Democrat party? The Democrats New Departure strategy might actually be effective without Southern Democrats using it as a veil to end reconstruction. Or the Copperheads would retain majority control, with the Southern states unable to vote. Either way in the 1890's the Democrats would look very similar to the Populists.

I would think that the Democratic Party brand would be too toxic to gain traction with Southern Blacks.
