Right, this is why I think they become a workers-rights labour party earlier in their history.

Here's another possibility: America gets a new social democratic party. The People's Party of the 1890s was fairly successful IOTL. It elected either directly or through fusion tickets (that is the same person running with multiple parties) 11 governors, 5 senators, and 40 congressmen.
Per Wikipedia:
"It was highly critical of capitalism, especially banks and railroads, and allied itself with the labor movement."
Maybe it would go on to replace the Democratic party like how in Britain the Labour party supplanted the Liberals.
