No Ghetto in the Venetian Republic

hey, all. i was browsing around TV Tropes a moment ago and, on this page, it was mentioned that the word "ghetto" apparently comes from Renaissance Venice, where a district was made for the local Jews to protect them rather than the Venetians going "Hey, we don't like these guys so let's force them into a slum", which actually lead to resentment towards the local Jews by the other citizens. i'm not sure about how accurate this is, so feel free to correct that and we can continue from there.

anyway, what does everyone think would happen if this original ghetto was never created.

well probably; i doubt there would ever not be places where "undesirables" to a give culture or regime are sent, deliberately or not. what i'm really wondering is if the lack of this Venetian ghetto would affect discrimination in any way

It really wouldn't. It's not like there was discrimination because of the ghetto- the ghetto was there because of discrimination. It just happens to have made the jump into other languages.

The residents of the gettos often liked the fact that their neighborhood was isolated. It became a fortress within a city and allowed them to barricade themselves against anti-Jewish riots and violence and kept random trouble makers out of their neighborhood. If I remember correctly the biggest opponents to Napoleon tearing down ghetto walls were the actual residents of the ghetto.

Actually, getthos/cancels/mesila etc. were often enforced against Jews, rather than a genuine desire to protect them.
When Judaism was assimilated to heresies in 1215, the point was to prevent Christians to be contamined by heresy/judaism. It's in the same order of idea than imposing them a distinctive sign on their clothes.

It did happeened that Jews asked for either institutionalising separated neighbourhoods (jeweries), but it's to be understood in the process of the degradation of their situation after the XIIIth century.

To have Venice Gettho never created you need at the very last to limit this degradation, and it's gonna be hard.
The easier way would eventually be to have Venice expelling the Jews out of the republic (maybe an earlier venetian decline?), to not have a gettho but form of crypto-judaism still existing (as "Portuguese" Jews in Bourbon France).
