No FDR-An Alternate election timeline 1928-The future

1928
A young,Former VP in the name of Franklin D. Roosevelt,A relative of former president,Teddy Roosevelt decides to throw his hat in the ring in 1928,Vowing for the Democratic Party nomination. He gets soundly defeated, and because of this,Roosevelt decides to sway away from political life. And pursues civil rights activities, instead. However In 1928,in the Democratic nomination,FDR brings up interesting discussions in the sense of Progressive-ism. This makes the Democratic convention different then previous years. The nomination ended up being much, much closer then originally expected, Gov Al. Smith and Senator Walsh were the final 2 contenders, and in the final round of the convention Gov. Al Smith pulled through with the victory as 3rd place finisher Senator James A. Reed gave his delegates to Al Smith.

Smith chose Senator Joseph Robison as his VP

The Republican convention went to Secretary Herbert Hoover,Hoover chooses Wisconsin Attorney General Herman Ekern as his VP,an extremely surprising choice.

The General election fight was brutal,But this was an election were the VP choice truly mattered. It is believed that Ekern threated to release scandals of tax evasion againist Hoover if he didn't select him as VP,Hoover did not let Ekern attend any events because of the bad blood,at the end of the day,Ekern released the scandals saying he just discovered this, and because he was a "moral man" he couldn't let it go unnoticed.

Smith wins.

Why? He'd been out of office 8 years and had lost the VP race in a landslide to Harding/Coolidge. He reentered politics in 1928 because Smith was leaving Albany and needed a replacement; some speculate that Smith thought FDR would die and provide him with an opportunity to reclaim the NY Governorship if the lost to Hoover. Without that experience Roosevelt is just a lightweight and an "also-ran" who loses to Smith. Does FDR get elected to some statewide office earlier? If not, it would be career suicide for him to run in 1928 and this doesn't line up with the shrewd politician Roosevelt was in reality. He made plenty of mistakes (court packing, internment, etc) but not like this...
