No Enlightenment

What if there was no 18th century enlightenment? It was the enlightenment that was a major cause of the American and French revolutions, as well as the abolitionist movement. Without the enlightenment, would these events become nullified, or just be postponed.

The problem with the question is it needs an origin. "The Englightenment" isn't as simple as "the internet" would be to do away with (in relative terms). Maybe you need no Glorious Revolution for a start, and have James II maintain his hold on power. A longer and more Divine Riight Stuart monarchy would certainly have many knock-on effects.

And people have revolted against governments seen as screwing them over long before the Enlightenment went on about it being a right, so in that regard, I'm not sure the revolutions are averted (butterflies may run amok, of course).

First, how do you stop "the enlightenment" from happening? By the late 1600's all sorts of trends in science, philosophy, theology, and geography were setting the stage. I suspect a PoD that would have stopped the enlightenment from occurring would have to be pretty far back.

That said, There were plenty of purely economic and political reasons for a revolution (or more properly a rebellion) in the American colonies that had nothing to do with the "rights of man". Probably the same could be said of the French Revolution. As noted by othe posters, people have revolted against unpopular rulers and distant oppressors for about as long as written history.
