1960 election
The Cooper campaign attacked the Humphrey administration for the recession. Not only that but Cooper challenged the Humphrey campaign to a debate. Cooper’s performance was regarded by many as fantastic, while Humphrey's performance was sub-par. Cooper’s hard campaigning in key states also helped him get a boost in the polls. But Humphrey's administration had passed significant civil rights legislation. So he gained support from Northeastern voters and African-American voters.

1961 New York Mayoral Election
Robert Kennedy had watched his older brother succeed in Washington as a senator and a vice-president. His younger brother, Ted was considering running for the Massachusetts senator seat in 1962. Robert decided to make his own legacy. In a different state, in a different office. He decided to run for Mayor of New York. Incumbent mayor Robert F. Wagner saw Kennedy's challenge and decided against running for a third term. Kennedy managed to win the Democratic nomination and the liberal nomination.

Hubert Humphrey winning the Deep South? Nah, not likely.

1962 senate election
In the 1962 Senate elections the Republicans held the upper hand. In 1960 they gained a majority and after president Cooper’s success in the Cuban Missile Crisis (same as OTL) they looked to be in a very good position.

The Death of a President
The day was November 23rd 1963. John S. Cooper was riding in a motorcade with his wife, Senate leader Lyndon B. Johnson, and several policemen. Cooper waved to the crowd who were screaming support for him. Cooper was feeling really good he was popular and he was successful as a president. Then... Crack! Crack! Crack! Crack! Cooper, Johnson, and two policemen collapsed to the ground. The perpetrator? A 24-year-old communist named Lee Harvey Oswald. He killed three men. The president, the senate minority leader, and a police officer. The country mourned its fallen president after inaugurating a new one. Everett Dirksen.

1964 Democratic Primaries
For the Democrats in 1964 it seemed like there were two factions. The Old Guard and the Newer one. More left-wing people were coming into the Democratic Party after the re-entry into Vietnam War* by the Dirksen administration and the Humphrey administration's civil rights activism. For the old guard there was George Wallace, the governor of Alabama. For the new there was Stuart Symington, senator from Missouri. The one potential candidate who seemed like he could connect the party was Vice-President Kennedy. But he announced his plans to run for Governor of Massachusetts, not president. Symington managed to ride the wave of left-wing support to the nomination, though. Winning almost every state except Indiana, California, and Florida. Wallace won Florida and Indiana and favorite son Pat Brown won California.
