Following her husband's assassination in 1983, Aquino became active and visible in various demonstrations and protests held against the Marcos regime. She began to assume the mantle of leadership left by her husband Ninoy and started to become the symbolic figurehead of the anti-Marcos political opposition. In the last week of November 1985, Marcos surprised the nation by announcing on American television that he would hold a snap presidential election in February 1986, in order to dispel and remove doubts against his regime's legitimacy and authority.
Initially reluctant, Aquino was eventually prevailed upon to heed the people's clamor, after one million signatures urging her to run for president were presented to her.
Initially reluctant, Aquino was eventually prevailed upon to heed the people's clamor, after one million signatures urging her to run for president were presented to her. Despite this, leader Laurel, did not want to give way to his close friend's widow but would rather the two would decide that Corazon Aquino would settle on becoming the Vice President instead in their meeting in Club Filipino.
The campaign period started from December 19, 1985 to February 5, 1986. During the campaign period, Doy Laurel and Cory Aquino promised to run a government that would be the exact opposite of the Marcos administration at that time. The battle-cry, " Tama na! Sobra na! Palitan na!" loosely translated, " Enough is enough! Time for a change in leadership!" and wearing any article of clothing that was yellow were the statements of the support of the UNIDO party. The Laurel-Aquino campaign was believed to center around the principle of morality in leadership.
The campaign of Salvador Laurel and Cory Aquino had numerous help from the church. One of them would be Archbishop Jaime Cardinal Sin who issued a pastoral letter on the snap elections urging the people to not fall for vote buying during the elections on 19 December 1985. On 28 December 1985, Cardinal Sin made a tract, "Guidelines on Christian Conduct During Elections," which had a part that said:
"Do not sell your vote. The acceptance of money to vote for a candidate (a practice we do not encourage) does not bind you to vote for that candidate. No one is 'obliged to fulfill an evil contact.'"
Eventually, Cardinal Sin reiterated on 19 January 1986 his second pastoral letter on the snap elections, "A Call to Conscience." This second letter provided significant amount of information about the statement issued by the Catholic Bishops Conference of the Philippines on 25 January 1986, "We Must Obey God Rather Than Men."
As the election campaign continued, Marcos was able to campaign in selected key cities while Laurel was able to campaign intensively and extensively, even going to remote places from the north of the Philippines to the south of the Philippines. The Aquino campaign concluded a rally that is believed to have 800 000 participants wearing yellow in Rizal Park and Roxas Boulevard forming a "sea of yellow."
Ferdinand Marcos would win due to his opponents being divided Cory Aquino would win as Vice President due to her votes being carried by the voters of Reuben Canoy and Doy Laurel as President as well as the other opponents of Marcos.
Note
I plan to cover what happened after the admins of pres. cory and ramos but it would be brief..similar to simple english wiki..in this TL Marcos is president until 1989, the antagonist in this timeline will be the Family of Marcos and Danding Cojuangco..so the TL will be short and focus on a few subjects..
