No Dr. Seuss?

How different would the world if childrens literature be if Ted "Dr. Seuss" Geisel wasnt born or decided to take on an alternate career (possibly as a political cartoonist?)?

Do you know that he started as a political cartoonist? I've got a book of his WWII era cartoons.

As a new father I've been reacquainting myself with Seuss of late, including noticing the reviews from the time...one of which applauds Seuss for getting young children's books beyond the humdrum of Dick & Jane.

If this review is accurate then w/o Seuss children's books as a creative and changing industry might have been hampered. Maybe instead cutesy stuff like Goodnight Moon would set the stage rather than surreal "bad behavior" stuff like Cat in the Hat. Maybe there'd be no Where the Wild Things Are. :(

I saw those...he later formally apologized for his blatant stereotyping of the Japanese.
Ja, it is scary. He BLASTS racial prejudice when it comes to anyone else, Jews, blacks, whatever, but buys into the Anti-jap line and never seems to notice. The contrast is REALLY jarring sometimes.

I'm glad he apologized later.

At the time the racism was understandable, not acceptable but understandable. It was political cartoons against the enemy.
Fortunately he apologized after.

The world would be a greyer and duller place

Dr Seuss and Roald Dahl make bedtime stories bearable. If those 2 authors had never existed I would have to read the new Dan Brown book to the kids that would put us all to sleep:)
