No Decline of Mainline Protestant Denominations

US doesn't get involved in Vietnam > No or less influential hippie counterculture > No or less widespread sexual revolution > general American attitudes toward morality, sex, etc remain locked in the 50's > millions upon millions of moralistic Americans keep attending church every Sunday

The preservation of European ethnic identities through the modern era, no southernization of the sunbelt, religion in american never embraces the search for "personal" enlightenment, no swarms of disillusioned boomers embracing evangelical christianity in the early 79's?

Perhaps the mainline denominations maintain a more literalistic interpretation of the Bible? As a result the "Evangelical" movement is contained within them and the more liberal factions are forced to either bear with it or break off and form their own churches...

How could Mainline Protestant denominations not decline starting from the mid-60s?

I could think of a scenario diverging where Kennedy doesn't get shot; he withdraws from Vietnam before it feeds the counterculture. That pisses off the Protestants, who accuse him of being weak on Communism. A very different Moral Majority arises, built from old-line Protestant denominations united in anti-Catholicism and anti-Communism.

Interesting but I don't think any anti-Catholic movement in the US in the later 60s could last very long with wide support. By then most anti-Catholic sentiment was dead in America. But still perhaps the Hippie movement is weaker and more diluted with many idealists drifting to mainline Protestant denominations which form socially conservative but liberal on economic issues and poverty-a sort of a continuation of the social justice gospel which unites both young college students and the old guard middle class and working class by still remaining theologically conservative.

Television and family cars aren't permitted. At one time people had little else to do on a Sunday and they even went to church to score incredible as it may seem. I suppose you could try to ban Darwin and most of the findings of paleontology but it might hasten the demise

This approach with ethnic identities would work, but you would run into situations where each individual could claim many nationalities and each would become "blurred."

I recall a school English class where the teacher took a survey: name your ancestral nationalities, and you can name more than one or two. When the poll was over, the largest number of checkmarks went to English, German and Irish. But true to prediction, there were more nationalities on the board than there were students in the room.

Such an extreme scenario would not be neccessery and more importantly implausible.
