No Benedict XVI

what if some one else (Jean-Marie Lustiger, Peter Turkson) had became Pope in 2005 who would of been? and what would their papacy look like?

Well if Peter Turkson were pope, he'd be the first black pope, which is something. Mind if I make a mildly racist but funny joke?

I recall at the time that some sections of the media were very upset that an African papal candidate* had failed to get anywhere. The same bits of the media being all grouchy that a traditionalist pope was elected. Africa, of course, being well-known in the modern Church for producing our most free-thinking and radical Cardinals.

* The first since Gelasius I, I believe.

Catholics should make new Popes pick cool names like they did in olden days, like Hilarius, Zephyrinus, Telesphorus, just to name a few.

Actually, that honour of producing radical cardinals goes to South American. I am not sure how the Catholic Church fare in Africa, but I think the African Protestant denominations is pretty fundamentalist in orientation.

Although note 'fundamentalist' may mean something different to us evangelicals (a better term)- mainly the ultra-conservative independant Baptist types in the American south, etc.

Traditionalists for us, too - meant to show sarcasm with the smiley, old boy. :)

Frankly, I don't think there will be any major differences from OTL, unless this different Pope gets assassinated or something.

Maybe it's because I generally ignore the inside parts of religion.

If it wasn't Ratzinger I believe the Italians would have recaptured the Papacy. Someone viewed as middle of the pack (and therefore not Martini who was considered too liberal). More of a political Pope than a theological one unlike Benedict. Probably would've called himself JP III. The biggest difference would be no Motu Proprio making it easier to say the Tridentine Rite and along with that less dialogue with Fellay. Definitely no alteration of doctrine re artificial contraception or ordination of women. There is some chance of a harder line towards the sex abuse scandals and possibly a commission might be invoked to explore married priests in the Latin Rite Church.
