Without barbed wire, will we see more electric fences, or will people simply have to grow hedges (and thus slow the settlement of the High Plains?) Electric fences aren't really suitable for warfare, so we'll likely see caltrops used instead!

It's not just the idea, but the technological will to realize it. After all, the Stirling hot-air engine is a good idea but nobody bothered to really make them in the 19th century when it could have replaced the steam engine on trains.
