No ABBA at the 1974 Eurovision Song Contest

Imagine if ABBA didn't win the 1974 Swedish preselection for the Eurovision Song Contest. Instead, Lasse Berghagen wins with the song "Min kärlekssång till dig", playing the acoustic guitar.

Would ABBA still reach long-time international fame?

I doubt it.

The English version of Waterloo basicly set the way ABBA sounded for the next years.
The Swedish VErsion was slower and not so catchy.
They probably still be Swedens biggest POP Export of the 70s, but not as big as in OTL.

They might not switch to disko music, but who knows, maybe they'd get another big break.

What's wrong with ABBA ? it a hundred times better that fucking Bee Gees (god I hate that falsetto high pitched voice)

the Bee Gees should never have existed. Their success is beyond me. Plus they were ugly. To me the Bee Gee success really tells about how shitty the 70's music could be. Seriously, the Beatles or Beach Boys probably shook their heads in disbelief and said "What the fuck, THESE SHIT sold as much albums as we did ?"

A generation of boys (me included) would not have fallen head over heels in love with Agnetha. My life would be a colder place.

The Bee Gees were OK before they played disco music. ABBA could play pop-rock and schlager before disco music even existed.

I like the Bee Gees, including "Words," "Stayin' Alive," and "Night Fever." I also like Andy Gibb.

(I think I'm a pretty easy sell on music, but so be it! :))

Another question is what happens to Eurovision? The success of ABBA with Waterloo breathed new life into the song contest that was, by that time, becoming staid and boring. Without ABBA would the contest have survived to the present day ?

The Eurovision Song Contest would probably had to allow more "real" pop bands into the contest, or face extinction.
