Nixon's short list: what if he'd picked some one else

I was surfing the net and found President Nixon's short list of vice-presidential replacements for Vice President Spiro Agnew, they are as follows

Chief Justice Warren E. Burger
former Secretary of Treasury John Connally
Governor of California Ronald Reagan
Governor of New York Nelson Rockefeller
House Minority Leader Gerald Ford

so what would of happened if he'd picked any of the others and not Gerald Ford?

Burger: He wouldn't pick the CJ to be VP, and he wasn't really a politician.
Connally: The Dems wouldn't confirm him becaue of his floor-crossing, but he'd do whatever it took to hold SVN and might pull off a squeaker in '76.
Reagan: The country wasn't ready for that until after Carter, and might prolong the recession.
Rocky: Too old, too much history.

The Chief Democrat in the House, I think it was Carl Albert, pretty much said Ford was the only choice they'd accept

A more interesting question is: what if Nixon had chosen somebody else in 1968? like California Lieutenant Governor Robert Finch, or Texas Congressman George Bush...

Finch? Both from CA, Reagan is P.O'ed, too liberal for Strom.
Bush? Possible, and then if Bush Jr. wins in '78, we see POTUS George W. Bush earlier... *ducks liberals*
