Nixon wins in 1960, what happens to Vietnam?

So Nixon wins over Kennedy (duh), and lets say he gets reelected in 1964, how would a President Nixon deal with the Vietnam War?

A couple thoughts IMO.

-I think one of the main reasons LBJ stuck to it in Vietnam was to not look weak on Communism. If Nixon's the President, he may not have the need to look tough on Communism, because he already had a pretty tough record.

- Nixon probably would not consider the Vietnamization strategy in the 1970's. Its actually possible that Nixon and Henry Kissinger never meet. Unless they are introduced by Rocky or someone.

-Nixon's vice President would be Henry Cabot Lodge Jr., in OTL he was the Ambassador to South Vietnam, why is this important? In OTL, Ambassador Lodge proposed South Vietnam become a U.S. protectorate, and relinquish their independence. Might Lodge convince Nixon to do this?

-Might North Vietnam react differently to a Nixon-led War effort than a Johnson-led war effort, possible. How might Nixon react to a Home-led PEace Movement differently to Johnson?

First of all, the US doesn't have a Lord Cromer. Secondly, if he wins re-election, Nixon doesn't care about the hippies. A good idea would be to send SVN proper equipment, and to keep Diem. Though Thieu was a relatively good President, he did not have a fraction of Diem's nationalist credibility, which was recognized by Ho himself.

.....What?

Diem is not killed in a half-assed coup nad probably does a better job in the long run in ennabling the ARVN to fight a counter-insurgency. The coup removed what legitamacy South Viet Nam's government had. With proper equipping by the US and tac air support, a Korea-type settlement would at least be possible.

A possible butterfly: JFK returns to the Senate and serves to his untimely death at the age of 60. RFK runs for President in 1968 and wins. Teddy Kennedy never runs for any public office.

RFK in 1968? Bit early. I mean, what is he in 1960. The younger brother of an U.S. Senator. Nobody waits for him. As he became a Senator for NY in 1964 IOTL, he was the heir of Camelot. In ATL he is just a guy from Massachutches. I think he will try to get a House-seat in 1962. Because his brother block the Senat-spot, he will then propably try to become governeur. Earliest moment for the presidency: 1976, maybe later.

Yes, that could also happen. If JFK had lived IOTL, RFK would be the Democratic nominee (Lyndon Johnson's delusions to the contrary), and perhaps lose to Nixon depending on Vietnam. If not, he wins in 1976 as you said. He will beat Reagan in '76 or for re-election in 1980.

I just don´t see, like somebody, who is in 1960 just the little brother of a guy who just lost a election, could be the nominee in 1968. More realistic is, that JFK pull a Nixon and runs 1968 again.

I said IOTL. ITTL you are correct.

Oh, I´m sorry, I missunderstood.
Still I´m not sure about it. The next president should be the brother of the incumbent president. I think JFK presidency would have to be a 150% sucess for this, Otherwise it would be too much look like a Dynastie.

I do believe Nixon would have pulled a "Johnson" in Vietnam as soon as he could. Kennedy tried to increase a bit at first, but keep it a limited conflict and tried to recoil from it in '63 with plans for future withdrawal of US combat forces from the South in either limited or total form. Nixon, on the contrary, was a hawk, and would seek by all means to keep the South from falling to the North (the man considered nuking North Vietnam, for God's sake), and from the get go. But the relations he could get with the USSR could play a big role in how Vietnam plays out; though if it's made a protectorate, the Soviets and North Vietnamese would be livid and would see their beliefs confirmed as they thought the US was trying to created a colony out of Vietnam.

We are still talking about Nixon right?
