Nixon for Senate '64

Let's say that Nixon decides not to run for CA Governor and runs for the Senate against Pierre Salinger in 1964. Nixon trounces Salinger obviously. What will Nixon do in the Senate, especially regarding the CRA/VRA? I can see him teaming up with his fellow "Leader of the Opposition" RFK on immigration legislation that IOTL culminated in the INA of 1965. 'Nam, other issues? Of course the WH will go completely bonkers. :D

Down the line, he would certainly be in a better position to organize support for a health care program. Teddy probably even stays in line both without Watergate and with the simple fact that there would be far fewer political points in it for him to block Nixon.

This is assuming he stays to lead in the Senate, not using it as a stepping stone for '68...

Does he run for POTUS in 1968? I'm not a Nixpert, but something tells me he wouldn't. Does Rocky win the GOP nod as a result?

I think your right about him beating Salinger. What does he say to get out of running in 62 against Brown? Do the democrats run some one different against Nixon in 64. Some one stronger? Once in the Senate he starts positioning him self to run for President. The only bad thing about running in 64 is that he saw what would happen to Goldwalter. But he was the loyal soldier and campaigned for him. He picked up a lot of IOU's for doing this. If he runs for the senate he can't campaign Nation wide. Does that hurt his chances in 68? I would say no. Because the GOP did not have great candidates in 68 . But who is the head of the republican party in California in 68? Nixon or Reagan? This could be a really good AH. time line to go into.

If LBJ's presidency goes as per OTL, Reagan will win. However if Rocky wins the GOP nod in '64, then Reagan will not do that telecast and never go into politics. In 1966 Nixon and Bobby will be doing their national stumping for select candidates as per OTL- a sort of frenemy proxy war leading up to '68. By '68 they will be competing for the WH as per OTL.

RFK-Rocky was considerably hyped at the time, but terribly overrated. As exciting as Bill Clinton running against Lincoln Chafee, aka the Dem being more (R) than the (R).

How long would Nixon have lasted as a Senator, assuming he decides he likes being a legislator and makes no further attempts to higher office? Maybe he retires ahead of 1994 - or dies.

Nixon, like Hillary, could become a Senate insider because of his temperament and interests, but like her it was merely a means to the end of the WH. RFK thought of it that way too, but he was never a member of the Senate "club" for personality/political reasons.
