Nixon elected in '60, assassinated in '63

Nixon manages to squeeze by Kennedy in 1960, winning the election by a similar margin to what he lost it by (razor thin). In 1963, he gets assassinated by Oswald (we will ignore all conspiracy theories for this discussion, and except tha Oswald was just a lone nut). This leaves Lodge as President.

What happens? Would Lodge be able to capitalize on the Nixon sympathy like LBJ did? What parts of Nixon's policies might Lodge pursue? Lodge was a supporter for better civil rights, which likely had cost the ticket some support in the south. Its not unlikely that he might pursue a similar goal as LBJ did (though with different approaches).

PS, Nixon's presidency between 61-63 are open for speculation as eell, but lets focus on Lodge if possible.

Lodge might be able to pass a Civil Rights bill through Congress, but it would likely not be as strong as the OTL Bill; seeing as he wasn't the same kind of master parliamentarian LBJ was.

He wasn't exactly a back bencher, either. I wouldn't sell him short so easily.

No one had the Parliamentarian skills like Johnson to twist the arms of Republicans and Southern Democrats to pass the strong and effective Civil Rights legislation that he did; it wouldn't be the same under any other President.

What arm twisting needed to be done with Republicans? They were the civil rights party of that period.

It depends on the provisions in the bill. Just because the general principle of civil rights has support that does not mean that a super-strong bill won't run into objections.

There were specific provisions of the bill that many Republicans were weary about despite supporting the idea of civil rights, so LBJ needed to arm-twist them to get the full and super-strong final version pushed through.

No Cuban Missile Crisis, for starters, due to Nixon being regarded as more "experienced" than Kennedy.

Has Henry Cabot Lodge Jr. as President. same Skill and influence as Johnson as President ?

Lodge was from 1936 to 1944 US senator for Massachusetts
spent in 1945 as US Officer in WW2
1946 to 1953 return as US senator for Massachusetts until John F. Kennedy get the seat
1953 to 1960 worked as Ambassador in U.N.
1960 selected as Vice president candidat

that man worked last time the Capitol Hill 8 years ago
I have serious doubt that Lodge has same Skill and influence as Johnson...

Nixon probably will agree to a referendum in Laos giving neutral control there. He will probably also back the Bay of Pigs invasion with air support and help topple the Casto government in Cuba. No Cuban Missile Crisis will occur in 1962. I don't see Nixon increasingly significantly the number of advisers in Vietnam. Lodge will probably keep this policy after Nixon's death and avoid significant escalation in Vietnam. There will be too little a military presence to provoke incidents like in the Gulf of Tonkin, the air bases, etc. South Vietnam will probably collapse later on as a result.

Pretty much, few if any people had the skills and influence necessary to get the legislation and programs through Congress that Johnson did besides Johnson himself, and the fact that Johnson was a Southern Democrat was a plus on his side that ultimately helped him in the end; something no one else would really have.
