Nirvana becomes an Indie band

What if Nirvana never becomes a big successful label band but neither is a complete failure but instead is a mostly local Washington state orientated band which tours around in the whole country occasionally (and is still together the next 25 years) ? Would Grunge fade away earlier and the rise of Hipphopp and Rap earlier ? (No bring Punk to the massses phenomena ?

Kurt lives and the band sways in and out of the public conscious, shifting into alternative rock as Grunge dies. The only reason they're as popular as they are was due to Kurt's death; before that, they were on par with Pearl Jam.

Nirvana was an Indie Band itself, heck unless a band is owned by a record every band are independant contractor itself.

Maybe they'll be like the Melvins.

It does open the door for UK indie to cross over to the USA more, without the tidal wave of grunge to compete with.

That could have some huge implications.. for a start, Blur moved away from indie-dance to Kinks-inspired English whimsy as a reaction against grunge. In this TL they probably stay a guitar-heavy version of Jesus Jones.
