Padres: 83-79- 26 GB
Rockies: 77-85- 32 GB
Diamondbacks: 61-101- 48 GB

Note 1: The change in format was made because the original stats (which were for a twelve-inning game with no courtesy runners) were unusable.

Note 2: Since the Braves and Brewers ended up tied for the two seed in the National League at 93-69. The first tiebreaker in the Pythagorean universe is season series; each team won three games. We go next to total runs in the season series, and the Braves outscored the Brewers 34-26. Therefore, the Braves are the two seed and the Brewers the three seed.

Next: Our final American League doubleheader, as the Orioles host the Blue Jays on September 10,

I accidentally deleted the Blue Jays-Orioles doubleheader from September 11, then used the wrong lineups on my redo. Here we go with Take 3:

Game 1:

Blue Jays 13, Orioles 12 (Blue Jays led 11-10 after seven)

The Jays scored twice in the top of the eighth to extend their lead. First baseman Vladimir Guerrero Jr. led off with a bouncer to short. D,J, Stewart, an outfielder playing his first major league game at short, bobbled the ball for an error, allowing Guerrero to reach. After shortstop Bo Bichette struck out swinging for out number one, left fielder Teoscar Hernandez whacked the first pitch he saw over the left field wall for a two-run homer to give the Jays a 13-10 lead.

The Orioles answered with two runs of their own in the bottom in the bottom of the eighth. With one out, second baseman Ramon Urias lined a single to left center. Catcher Pedro Severino took a called third strike for the second out, center fielder Cedric Mullins hit a ball down the right field line that disappeared over the wall for a two-run homer that cut the Jays' lead to 13-12.

Rafael Dolis pitched a scoreless ninth to earn his sixth save of the year. That means that Jordan Romano's save has been disallowed. He now has twenty for the season,

S- Dolis (6)

HR- TOR: Hernandez (34)
BAL: Mullins (32)

Game 2:

Blue Jays 13, Orioles 6 (Blue Jays led 11-2 after seven)

The Jays scored twice in the top of the eighth. Second baseman Marcus Semien lined a one-out single up the middle, and Guererro was hit on the right forearm by a pitch to put two men on. Bichette followed with a double to left that scored both runners, and the Jays led 13-2.

The O's refused to go quietly, scoring four times in the bottom of the eighth. Shortstop Richie Martin led off with a lined single to left. Third baseman Kelvin Gutierrez followed with a base hit to left center that put runners at the corners. Catcher Austin Wynns struck out swinging for out number one, but Mullins blasted a three-run homer over the right-center field wall to cut the Jays' lead to 13-5. First baseman Trey Mancini went down swinging for out number two, but designated hitter Anthony Santander beat out a bouncer to third for an infield single. That brought up right fielder Austin Hays, whose double off the wall in center scored Santander to make it 13-6,

HR- BAL: Mullins (33)

The Jays and Rays have tied for the AL East title at 101-61, which is the same record as the AL West champion Astros. The first thing that needs to be settled is the AL East. The Rays won the season series eleven games to eight, so they'll host a one-game playoff at Tropicana Field on Monday, October 4. First pitch will be at 1PM Eastern on ESPN, (The rest of the scenario is confusing me a bit, so I'll get into it after the champion in the East has been determined,)

Next: Game 163 between the Jays and the Rays at the Trop. Alek Manoah will start for the Jays, while Shane McClanahan pitches for the Rays.

Here's a short recap of the tiebreaker game between the Jays and the Rays:

Blue Jays 5, Rays 4 (ESPN: Matt Vasgersian, Alex Rodriguez, Buster Olney)

The Jays are the AL East champions, as they scored five runs in the third off of Rays starter Shane McClanahan and hung on from there, The key blow for the visitors was Viadinir Guerrero Jr,'s three-run homer, his forty-ninth of the year. Bo Bichette added a run-scoring triple, and left fielder Lourdes Gurriel Jr. singled in the other run. Bichette, Gurriel, and center fielder Randal Grichuk all had two hits for the visitors. Rookie Alek Manoah pitched six strong innings, giving up one run on six hits and striking out eleven without giving up a walk, Closer Jordan Romano overcame a leadoff homer from Rays catcher Mike Zunino in the bottom of the ninth to retire the next three batters and earn his twenty-first save.

Zunino and second baseman Brandon Lowe were the offensive leaders for the Rays; they were each two for four with a homer and two RBIs. Zunino's other RBI came on a book-rule double in the fourth, while Lowe hit a two-run homer in the eighth. First baseman Jordan Luplow also went two for four in a losing cause. McClanahan also pitched six innings, giving up five runs on seven hits while walking two and striking out six.

Final totals: Blue Jays 5-10-0, Rays 4-10-0,

W- Manoah (10-2)
S- Romano (21)
L- McClanahan (10-7)

HR- TOR: Guerrero Jr. (49)
TB: Lowe (40), Zunino (34)

The next night, the Rays welcomed the Red Sox to the Trop for the American League Wild Card Game and dealt them a 5-0 shutout. Left fielder Randy Arozarena and designated hitter Nelson Cruz each hit home runs, and four Tampa pitchers combined on a nine-hit shutout, Shane Baz pitched the first five innings to get the win,

The Rays are headed for Houston, where they'll take on the Western Division champion Astros in one ALDS beginning Thursday, The Astros won the season series against the Blue Jays four games to two in order to claim home field advantage throughout the American League playoffs. The other ALDS (Blue Jays vs. Central Division champion White Sox) will also begin Thursday at the Rogers Centre in Toronto.

Now it's time for Game 1 of the second American League Division Series from the Rogers Centre in Toronto, The date is Thursday, October 7.:

Blue Jays 1st: Center fielder George Springer led off with a double into the left center power alley. Second baseman Marcus Semien followed with a base hit to right center that scored Springer and gave the Jays a 1-0 lead. First baseman Vladimir Guerrero Jr. made it three straight hits with a single to left; Semien moved to second. Shortstop Bo Bichette forced Guerrero at second for out number one, with Semien moving to third. White Sox starter Lance Lynn struck out right fielder Teoscar Hermandez swinging for out number two, but designated hitter Lourdes Gurriel Jr. walked to load the bases and bring up left fielder Corey Dickerson, who swung at the first pitch he saw and hit a shallow fly to right that was caught by Adam Engel for the final out. The Jays have left the bases loaded, but they still lead the White Sox 1-0 after one.

White Sox 3rd: Shortstop Tim Anderson led off with a slow roller to first, By running full speed out of the batter's box, he managed to beat Guerrero to the bag for an infield single. Third baseman Yoan Moncada struck out swinging for out number one, which brought first baseman Jose Abreu to the plate. Here's Kenny Albert with the count one ball and one strike:

"This was another huge year for Abreu, as he hit thirty home runs and finished with 117 RBIs. Last year, of course, he was the MVP of the American League in the pandemic-shortened season, as he drove in sixty runs in sixty games. The White Sox failed to make it out of the Division Series, though, as thy lost a thriller to the Twins in five games. Ryu checks Anderson at first, and here's the one-one pitch......HIGH FLY BALL TO DEEP CENTER FIELD! BACK GOES SPRINGER, HE'S AT THE WALL, BUT IT'S GONE! A two-run homer for Jose Abreu that figures to be the first of many in this series, and the White Sox take a 2-1 lead."

Buck Martinez: "Hyun-Jin Ryu got this pitch a little too far up in the strike zone, and you can't do that when you're dealing with someone as powerful as Abreu He just lands all over this pitch and hits it to the deepest part of the ballpark, It has to be well over four hundred feet."

Albert: "438 feet, according to StatCast, And there will almost surely be more where that one came from."

Catcher Yasmani Grandal took a called third strike for out number two, but center fielder Luis Robert kept the inning alive with a base hit to left. Left fielder Eloy Jiminez's fly to left center was caught by Springer to end the inning, but the Pale Hose have taken the lead thanks to Abreu's dinger. After two and a half, it's White Sox 2, Blue Jays 1.

White Sox 4th: First baseman Gavin Sheets led off with a lined single to right. Right fielder Adam Engel's base hit to left center put two men one, Second baseman Leury Garcia went down swinging for out number one, but Anderson stroked a base hit up the middle to score Sheets and make it 3-1 Chicago, Moncada banged a double off the wall in right to score Engel and Anderson and put the Sox up 5-1, and Abreu's sizzler into the left center power alley allowed him to change places with Moncada ad gave the visitors a 6-1 lead. That was all for Ryu; Francisco Berrios came out of the bullpen to face Grandal, who smacked the first pitch he saw into right for a base hit that put runners at the corners. But the new Jays pitcher retired Robert on a pop to short and Jimenez on a popup to second to end the inning, The Sox have expanded their lead by scoring four runs on six hits. They also left runners at the corners, but as we go to the bottom of the fourth in Game 1 they lead the Blue Jays 6-1.

Blue Jays 4th: Third baseman Santiago Espinal led off with a base hit to left center. but catcher Reese McGuire struck out swinging for out number one. Springer was next, and here's Kenny with the count one ball and one strike:

"Springer was limited to seventy-eight games this season, but he still managed to hit twenty-two home runs and provide a spark at the top of the Blue Jays' lineup. This is probably Lynn's last inning, as he's getting close to the eighty-pitch mark. Garrett Crochet is throwing in the Chicago bullpen. One-one to Springer is HIT HIGH AND DEEP TO CENTER! BACK IS ROBERT, LOOKING UP, BUT IT'S GONE!.......Abreu hit a home run to the deepest part of the park for the White Sox earlier, and now George Springer does it for the Jays to make this a 6-3 game."

Martinez: "Lynn's getting a bit tired and starting to leave his pitches out over the plate, and that's how Springer got a hold of this one, He has tremendous power, and once he gets hold of a mistake it's headed out of the park, (Sox manager) Tony LaRussa doesn't look pleased, and Crochet's really starting to bear down in the bullpen,"

Semien was called out on strikes, but Guerrero singled up the middle to keep the inning alive. Bichette beat out a bouncer to short for an infield single to put two men on, and a walk to Hernandez loaded the bases and ended Lynn's day. Crochet got Gurriel to ground to short on the second pitch, and the Jays had left the bases loaded. They've crept a bit closer thanks to the dinger from Springer; after four, it's Chicago 6, Toronto 3.

White Sox 5th: Sheets led off with a walk against Berrios, which brought Engel to the plate. Here's Kenny:

"In the leadup to this series, LaRussa wanted nothing to do with the idea of a curse. He said that whether the Sox haven't won a championship in a hundred and four years or a thousand and four years has no bearing on the series whatsoever. He's right, of course, but we'll see how his team reacts as the pressure mounts throughout the postseason. First pitch to Adam Engel is HIT HIGH AND DEEP TO CENTER! BACK GOES SPRINGER, TO THE TRACK, TO THE WALL, AND IT IS GONE!,,,,,,,,That's three home runs tonight, all hit to the deepest part of the park, and Engel's blast has extended the White Sox' lead to 8-3 here in the fifth."

Martinez: "There must be a magnet out in center field that's pulling balls toward it or something, Kenny. As you just said, this is the third home run of the night, and they've all been no doubters over that fence out there. This one looked to be longer than Abreu's, and that one was a moon shot."

Albert: "We have a new leader in the clubhouse, as Engel's homer traveled 444 feet according to StatCast."

Berrios settled down to retire the next three batters in a row. Garcia grounded to second, Anderson tapped to first, and Moncada flew to Hernandez in right. But the Pale Hose have regained their five-run lead thanks to Engel's homer, and halfway through Game 1 they lead the Blue Jays 8-3.

Blue Jays 6th: Guerrero led off against new White Sox pitcher Aaron Bummer. Here's Kenny with the count two balls and no strikes:

"Guerrero certainly lived up to his pedigree and reputation this year, as he hit forty-nine home runs, including one in the one-game playoff in St. Petersburg on Monday, He's certainly one of the main candidates for MVP of the American League as well, and the Blue Jays need him to come through here in the last of the sixth. Bummer's two-ball pitch........HAMMERED DOWN THE LINE IN LEFT, JIMENEZ OVER NEAR THE FOUL POLE, DOES HE HAVE A CHANCE, IT'S STAYING FAIR......Left field umpire Greg Gibson says it's a home run, and Tony LaRussa looks like he wants to challenge this one,"

Martinez: "He's going to lose, Kenny. This ball was fair from start to finish. There was never a hook; it was a straight-up missile off the bat of Vlad Guerrero, and they've talked LaRussa out of the challenge over on the White Sox bench, which is a good thing because that review would have taken about five seconds."

Bummer got the next two outs easily, as Bichette popped to Garcia at second and Hernandez grounded to second. Gurriel singled up the middle to keep the inning alive, and Dickerson's single to right put two men on. But Espinal's fly to Jimenez in left ended the threat. Guerrero's two-run homer has the Jays within one-swing distance, but as we go to the seventh the Sox still lead 8-4.

White Sox 7th: Engel led off with a double into the left field corner against new Jays pitcher Adam Cimber. Garcia's liner was gloved by Semien for out number one, but Engel moved to third om Anderson's fly to deep left and scored on Moncada's double to right, which gave the Sox their ninth run, Abreu went down swinging to end the inning, but the visitors have added another run on two hits while leaving a runner at second. As we stretch north of the border, it's Chisox 9, Bluebirds 4.

White Sox 8th: Jimenez singled to left center with two out against new Toronto pitcher Tim Mayza. Sheets singled up the middle to put two men on, and Engel brought both runners home with a double off the top of the wall in right to put the Sox in double digits. Garcia's two-hopper to short ended the inning, but the Soc have scored a pair of runs on three hits while leaving Engel at second. But Adam's driven in four runs today, and he's a big reason why the Sox lead 11-4 after seven and a half.

Blue Jays 8th: With one out against Sox reliever Matt Foster, Bichette drew a walk. Hernandez hit a grounder to short that should have been a double play, but Anderson couldn't find the handle, which allowed Teoscar to reach. Gurriel's fly to right for the second out allowed Hernandez to move to third and brought Dickerson to the plate. Here's Kenny with the count no balls and a strike:

"The only other time that these franchises have met in the postseason was in 1993, when the Blue Jays defeated the White Sox in the American League Championship Series four games to two on their way to the franchise's only world championship so far. The Sox haven't been to the World Series since 1964, when they lost to the Reds in six games. Dickerson is one for four with a single in the sixth, AND HE DRIVES FOSTER'S ONE-STRIKE PITCH DEEP TO RIGHT CENTER! BACK IS ROBERT, HE LEAPS AT THE WALL, BUT THIS ONE IS GONE!.....Corey Dickerson absolutely crushed that ball! A no-doubt home run. and the Jays' deficit is down to 11-7."

Martinez: " This pitch was supposed to fool Dickerson low and outside, but Foster left it too high, and it was right over the middle of the plate where Dickerson could get to it with no trouble. Perfect home run swing right there, and the Jays are back to within four."

Espinal struck out swinging to retire the side, but Dickerson's blast has cut into the Sox' lead; as we head to the ninth, they're in front of the homestanding Jays 11-7,

That was all the scoring; the Jays put runners at the corners in the bottom of the ninth on a walk to Springer and a single by Semien, but closer Liam Hendriks came out of the bullpen in a non-save situation to strike out Guerrero looking and Bichette swinging to end the game. Final score: White Sox 11, Blue Jays 7, and the White Sox lead the best-of-five series one game to none.

Engel was named Player of the Game by FS1, He was four for four plus a walk with a home run, three runs scored, and four RBIs. Abreu was four for five plus a walk with a home run and three RBIs, and Moncada was two for five plus a walk and three RBIs. Sheets was three for four plus a walk and scored three runs, and Anderson was two for six with an RBI and two runs scored.

For the Jays, Guerrero was three for five with a home run to lead the offense. Dickerson was two for five with a three-run homer, and Springer was two for five plus a walk with a two-run homer. Espinal was three for five and scored a run, Semien was two for six and drove in a run, and Bichette was two for five and scored a run. Starting pitcher Hyun-Jin Ryu lasted just three and a third innings, giving up six runs on nine hits while walking two and striking out five. He was charged with the loss.

Final totals: Blue Jays 11-18-1, White Sox 7-16-0.

Now it's time for Game 2 of the second American League Division Series from the Rogers Centre in Toronto. The date is Friday, October 8:

Lineup Changes:

White Sox- Luis Robert moves up to second. Jose Abreu replaces Gavin Sheet at first base. Eloy Jimenez moves up to fifth. Yoan Moncada moves down to sixth. Andrew Vaughn will serve as the designated hitter and bat seventh. Finally, Leury Garcia and Adam Engel will change places in the batting order; Garcia will bat eighth and Engel will bat ninth.

Blue Jays- Teoscar Hernandez moves from right field to left field. Corey Dickerson will serve as the designated hitter. Alejandro Kirk replaces Reese McGuire behind the plate and will bat seventh. Randal Grichuk gets the start in right field and will bat ninth.

White Sox 1st: Tim Anderson led off against Blue Jays starter Robbie Ray. Here's the call from Kenny Albert:

"Tim Anderson leads off for the White Sox. He was two for six last night in Game 1, drove in a run and scored twice, Glad to have you with us here in FS1, Game 1 was a slugfest won by the White Sox 11-7, and Game 2 starts with a high fly ball to deep left center! Going back is Springer, he's at the wail, BUT THIS BALL IS GONE!......Tim Anderson picks up right where we left off in Game 1, as he hits Robbie Ray's first pitch over the fence in left center field to give the White Sox a 1-0 lead."

Buck Martinez: "The slugfest continues, as Anderson went down and got this slider. It was a good pitch, but Anderson was really quick with his bat and got all of this ball. It looks like we're in for another power display, and I feel sorry for the pitchers, because they're going to look much worse than they are if this keeps up,"

Robert grounded to third for the first out, but Abreu singled to left. A walk to Yasmani Grandal put two men on, but Eloy Jimenez hit a weak bouncer to third. Santiago Espinal stepped on the bag to double off the incoming Robert, then threw to first to complete the inning-ending double play. Anderson's first-pitch home run has given the Sox the lead; now it's the Jays' turn.

Blue Jays 1st: George Springer led off against White Sox starter Lucas Giolito. Here's Kenny:

"Springer homered in a losing cause last night, and he was two for five overall plus a walk. His RBI production was down from his peak in Houston, but he still hit twenty-two home runs working mostly from the leadoff spot. Lucas Giolito ready with his first pitch of the night, AND SPRINGER ABSOLUTELY TATTOOS IT! WAY BACK AND GONE OVER THE WALL IN DEEP LEFT FIELD! THIS GAME IS TIED AT ONE!.......That's the second home run of the series for George Springer, and it might be the first time in postseason history that the leadoff batter on each team has hit a home run in on the first pitch they saw."

Martinez: "This is the reason that the Blue Jays signed Springer. He's solid in center and right and can run the bases well, but his foremost attribute is the home run power he shows from the leadoff spot. This was gone from the moment it left Giolito's hand, and we're even again just like that."

Albert: "Left field is 328 feet from home plate at the Rogers Centre, and Springer's homer traveled 365 feet. It was what they used to call a tape-measure shot."

Giolito settled down to get the next three batters in order, but Springer's home run has tied Game 2 at one after an inning.

White Sox 2nd: Garcia and Engel drew back-to-back walks with two out. Anderson beat out a grounder to short for an infield single to load the bases, and then it was Robert's turn against Ray. Here's Kenny with the count no balls and a strike:

"There's first base umpire Sam Holbrook, who called Anderson safe on that bang-bang play at first a moment ago, It looked close according to our replays, but (Blue Jays manager) Charlie Montoyo opted not to challenge, so the bases are loaded for Robert. who grounded to third his first time up. He's down a strike at the moment, as Ray looks in for the sign from Kirk, One-strike pitch.....HIGH FLY BALL GOING OUT TO DEAD CENTER! SPRINGER GOING BACK, HE'S AT THE WALL, BUT IT'S A GRAND SLAM!.....Luis Robert goes deep to the biggest part of the park, and in a little over ten innings each team has now hit four home runs in this series. The White Sox have taken a 5-1 lead."

Martinez: "And this is the fourth of those home runs hit to dead center field. It's been an amazing display of home run power so far, but it was those back-to-back walks to Garcia and Engel that landed Robbie Ray in trouble to start. Right now, Montoyo's muttering the old manager's refrain: 'Oh, those bases on balls!'"

Abreu took Ray's first pitch squarely on the knee, and he pointed at the Jays' starter and started for the mound with bad intentions. Home plate umpire D.J. Reyburn headed off a possible brawl by darting out from behind home plate and stepping in front of the Sox first baseman, who said a few more choice words, then took his base. Gramdal walked on four pitches to continue the inning, but Jimenez bounced the first pitch he saw down to third. Espinal stepped on the bag to force the incoming Abreu, and the side was retired, But the Sox have taken the lead thanks to Robert's grand slam, which was set up by a pair of walks and an infield single. After an inning and a half, it's White Sox 5, Blue Jays 1.

Blue Jays 3rd: With one out, Grichuk lined a single up the middle. Springer's base hit to right center moved Grichuk to third, and Marcus Semien brought him home with a sacrifice fly to deep left center. Jimenez's throw was up the line at first, which allowed Springer to take second. Vladimir Guerrero Jr's line drive was gloved by Garcia at second to end the inning, but the Jays have crept closer thanks to a pair of singles and Semien's sac fly. After three, it's Chicago 5, Toronto 2,

Blue Jays 5th: With one out, Espinal singled to right. Grichuk's single to left put two men on, and Springer followed with a double off the wall in right that scored Espinal and brought the Jays back to within 5-3. Grichuk was held at third, and Semien brought both runners home with a double into the left center power alley. Reynaldo Lopez was just about ready in the Chicago bullpen, but White Sox manager Tony LaRussa stayed with Giolito. Guerrero made him rue his decision, as he stroked a one-one pitch into left field for a hit, Semien scored easily, and the Jays led 6-5, Bichette beat out a grounder to short for an infield single to put two men on again, and Hernandez followed with a base hit to left, which brought Vlad home to make it 7-5 and moved Bichette to third.

That was all for Giolito; Lopez finally came in at least two batters too late, a move that LaRussa was roasted for both locally and nationally over the next two days. Dickerson lofted Lopez's second pitch to Robert in right center field, which brought Bichette home and gave the Jays an 8-5 lead. Kirk's single to left put two men on again, but Espinal went down swinging to retire the side. The Jays have taken the lead, scoring six runs on eight hits and a sacrifice fly while leaving runners at first and second. We've played five in Game 2, and the AL East champs lead the AL Central champs 8-5.

White Sox 8th: Grandal led off with a double into the right center power alley against Jays reliever Adam Cimber. Jimenez's pop to short was caught by Bichette for out number one. Moncada's single to right center put runners at the corners, and Grandal scored when Vaughn forced Moncada for the second out, Garcia was next, and Guerrero made the defensive play of the series so far to end the inning. Here's Kenny's call:

"Ground ball to first, Guerrero has to wait for the hop, now it's a race to the bag, who wins it......GUERRERO BY AN EYELASH TO END THE INNING, AND GARCIA THROWS HIS HELMET IN DESPAIR! WHAT A PLAY BY VLAD GUERRERO JR., AND THE WHITE SOX ARE DONE IN THE EIGHTH!......Vladimir Guerrero Sr, cheers on his son from a suite high above, and it's hugs all around after that play. The Jays lead 8-6 after seven and a half in Game 2."

That was all the scoring. Jordan Romano retired the Sox one-two-three in the top of the ninth to preserve an 8-6 Jays victory, and this best-of-five series is even at a game apiece.

Semien was named Player of the Game by FS1. He drove a run with a sacrifice fly in the third, and his two-run double tied the game in the fifth, Springer was three for five with a home run and an RBI double, and he also scored twice. Grichuk was three for four out of the ninth spot of the batting order, and he scored twice. Kirk was two for four. Ray gave up five runs on four hits, four walks, and a hit batsman over the first two innings, then retired sixteen of the final seventeen hitters he faced, allowing only a leadoff double to Moncada in the sixth.

Anderson led the White Sox on offense, going two for five with a homer and scoring twice. Robert hit a grand slam in the second, and Moncada was two for four, Grandal scored a run and walked twice.

Final totals: Blue Jays 8-13-0, White Sox 6-7-0.

W- Ray (1-0)
S- Romano (1)
L- Giolito (0-1)

Now it's time for Game 3 of the second American League Division Series from Guaranteed Rate Field in Chicago. The date is Sunday, October 10:

Lineup Changes:

Blue Jays
- Teoscar Hernandez moves from left field back to right field. Corey Dickerson is back in left field after serving as the designated hitter in Game 2, Santiago Espinal moves up to seventh, Danny Jansen is back behind the plate and will bat eighth. Finally, Cavan Biggio replaces Vladimir Guerrero Jr. at first base and will bat ninth, Guerrero will serve as the designated hitter,

White Sox- Gavin Sheets will serve as the designated hitter and bat seventh. Leury Garcia moves from second base to right field, Cesar Hernadez gets the start at second base and will bat ninth.

Blue Jays 1st: George Springer walked on four pitches to start the game. After Marcus Semien struck out swinging, Vladimir Guerrero Jr.'s bloop fell in left field for a base hit, moving Springer to third. Bo Bichette lined a base hit of his own to left that scored Springer and gave the Jays a 1-0 lead. Hernandez walked to load the bases, and after a twelve-pitch at bat Dickerson did the same, forcing Guerrero home and making it 2-0. Espinal struck out swinging for out number two, but Jansen gave the Sox faithful a momentary scare when he lifted a high fly ball deep to left. Eloy Jimenez made the catch a step in front of the warning track to end the inning, but the visitors have struck for two runs on three hits and three walks while leaving the bases loaded. Let's see how the home squad responds.

Blue Jays 3rd: Guerrero led off the inning against White Sox starter Dylan Cease. Here's Kenny Albert with the count one ball and one strike:

"Cease recovered nicely from that rocky first inning, as he struck out the side in the top of the second. As for Guerrero, he was held in check offensively in Game 2, but made that insane defensive play against Leury Garcia in the eighth to save a run. He said after the game that he didn't think that he'd beaten Garcia to the bag until he'd seen the replay. One-one pitch is HIT HIGH AND DEEP TO LEFT! JIMENEZ BACK, HE'S AT THE WALL, BUT THIS ONE IS GONE!......Vladimir Guerrero Jr. with his second home run of the series, and the Blue Jays now lead 3-0 here in the third."

Buck Martinez: "Cease looked like he'd settled down and started to pound the strike zone in the second inning, but it seemed like he was afraid to challenge Guerrero, who waited for Cease to make a mistake that he could hit, then drove it over the left field wall. (White Sox manager) Tony LaRussa can't be liking this, and it looks like they're going to get someone throwing in the Chicago bullpen. The White Sox can't let this game get away from them any more than it already has."

Bichette continued Cease's problems by walking on four pitches. Cease caught Hernandez looking for out number one, then struck out Dickerson swinging for the second out. Espinal's base hit to left put runners at the corners, but Jansen's liner was gloved by Yoan Moncada to end the inning. The Jays have added a run on Guerrero's solo homer, but they've also left runners at first and third. After two and a half, it's Blue Jays 3, White Sox 0.

Blue Jays 5th: Guerrero again led off against Cease. Here's Kenny:

"It's been a tale of odds and evens for Dylan Cease. He cruised in both the second and the fourth, striking out five of a possible six batters, but he's had trouble in the first and third, giving up three runs on four hits and four walks. He'll face Guerrero to start the fifth, and the last time Guerrero led off an inning, he did so with a home run to deep left that traveled 354 feet, according to StatCast. We'll see if he has better luck this time, First pitch.......CRUSHED TO DEEP RIGHT CENTER! BACK IS ROBERT, AT THE WALL, AND GONE!.........We just finished talking about Cease possibly having better luck against Guerrero, and Vlad put an end to that notion in a hurry, Buck.:"

Martinez: "Guerrero is absolutely locked in right now. The last homer was a mistake on Cease's part, but this pitch was well-placed on the outside corner, and Vlad went down and got all of it. That's going to be all for Dylan Cease; as I've said before, the White Sox can't let a swing game like this one get away, and it's on the verge of doing just that at this point."

Jose Ruiz came out of the Chicago bullpen and walked Bichette to keep the inning alive, as Cease had in the third. He rebounded to catch Hernandez looking at strike three and strike Dickerson out swinging, also as Cease had done in the third. Espinal also did as he had done in the third and more, doubling off the wall in left to score Bichette and give the Jays a 5-0 lead. Jansen struck out swinging to end the inning. The Jays have added two runs on two hits and a walk, with the bi blow coming on Guerrero's second homer of the night. Halfway through Game 3, it's Toronto 5, Chicago 0.

Blue Jays 6th: With one out, Springer lined a single to right. Semien flew to Robert in shallow left center for the second out, which brought Guerrero back to the plate. Here's Kenny with the count two balls and no strikes:

"Lopez seems like he's pitching around Guerrero, and who can blame him, or Tony LaRussa for that matter? It They'd almost certainly rather take their chances with Bichette, Blue Jays up 5-0 here in the top of the sixth, and Vlad looking to join the exclusive club of hitters who have hit three home runs in a postseason game."

Martinez: "They'd be foolish to give him anything at all to hit, Kenny,"

Albert: "Springer not going with Guerrero at the plate. TWO-BALL PITCH HIT HIGH AND DEEP TO LEFT! JIMENEZ BACK, HE'S AT THE WALL, AND IT'S GONE! VLAD GUERRERO HAS DONE IT! THREE HOME RUNS IN A POSTSEASON GAME!......This one was a bit of a wall-scraper, Buck, but it still counts."

Martinez: "He was actually a beat late with that swing. If he'd timed it perfectly, that ball would be on I-94 headed for Milwaukee. What a night for Guerrero, and there you see his mom and dad celebrating an incredible feat. He still has at least one more at-bat to try for four, so don't go away."

Ryan Tepera replaced Lopez and caught Bichette looking to end the inning. But Guerrero's third homer of the night has extended the Jays' lead to 7-0 after five and a half. (Author's note: Guerrero walked on four pitches in the eighth to end his night,)

Blue Jays 9th: Dickerson's fly ball to left center dropped in for a leadoff double. He held at second on Espinal's grounder to third. but Jansen's lined single to left center brought him home to make it 8-0 Toronto. Biggio grounded into a 6-4-3 inning-ending double play, but the Jays have added another insurance run, Now it's up to starting pitcher Steven Matz to try for the shutout in the last of the ninth. He's blanked the Chisox on four hits so far, and he has an 8-0 lead to work with.

White Sox 9th: Tim Anderson led off with a double to right. He held at second on Robert's bouncer to short. but moved to third on Jose Abreu's fly to Hernandez in deep right. Yasmani Grandal broke up Matz's shutout bid with a bloop double to left center that scored Anderson and put the Sox on the board, but Matz struck Jimenez out swinging to finish his complete game. Final score: Blue Jays 8, White Sox 1, and the Blue Jays lead the best-of-five series two games to one.

Guerrero was the unquestioned Player of the Game according to FSI1. He was four for four plus a walk with four runs scored, three home runs and four RBIs, Springer also had a big night, going two for four plus a walk with two runs scored. Espinal and Jansen each went two for five with an RBI.. Matz would have been Player of the Game on most other nights; he went the distance. giving up just one run on six hits and striking out seven without walking anyone. He threw 103 pitches.

For the White Sox, Anderson was the only man in the lineup with more than one hit; he was two for four and scored the team's only run, The pitching staff struck out fifteen Blue Jays in a losing cause; Biggio and Semien led the parade of shame by getting punched out three times apiece. The only Blue Jay in the starting lineup not to strike out was Guerrero,

Final totals: Blue Jays 8-13-0, White Sox 1-6-0.

W- Matz (1-0)
L- Cease (0-1)

HR- TOR: Guerrero Jr. 3 (4)

After a day's postponement due to rain, the series continues with Game 4 on Tuesday afternoon here at Guaranteed Rate Field. First pitch is scheduled for shortly after 2PM Eastern, Alek Manoah will start for the Jays, while Carlos Rodon takes the ball for the Pale Hose.

Now it's time for Game 4 of the second American League Division Series from Guaranteed Rate Field in Chicago. The date is Tuesday, October 12:

Blue Jays- Vladimir Guerrero Jr. moves back to first base. Teoscar Hernandez moves back to left field. Lourdes Gurriel Jr. will serve as the designated hitter and bat sixth. Finally, Randal Grichuk is back in right field and will bat ninth.

White Sox- Yoan Moncada moves back up to second. Luis Robert, Jose Abreu, Yasmani Grandal, and Eloy Jimenez, who batted second through fifth respectively in Game 3, will bat third through sixth.

White Sox 1st: Tim Anderson led off against Blue Jays starter Alek Manoah. Here's Kenny Albert with the count one ball and no strikes:

"Anderson is six for fifteen so far in the series and hit a leadoff homer in Game 2. On Sunday night in Game 3, he was the only man in the Chicago lineup with more than one hit, and he scored the team's only run. Manoah ready with the one-ball pitch.......HIT HIGH AND DEEP TO DEAD CENTER! BACK GOES SPRINGER, HE'S AT THE WALL, AND THIS ONE IS GONE!.......Tim Anderson with his second leadoff homer of this series, and it's 1-0 Chicago as the crowd here at Guaranteed Rate Field starts to whoop it up in earnest."

Buck Martinez: "Tim Anderson has definitely done his job as the catalyst for this White Sox offense throughout this series, and he really sows off his power here, hitting this ball to the deepest part of the ballpark, That's one of the amazing things about this series: the number of home runs that have been hit to straightaway center, both here and at the Rogers Centre in Toronto, It shows just how powerful the current generation of players is."

Anderson's homer traveled 432 feet according to StatCast; center field at Guaranteed Rate Field is 400 feet from home plate. Manoah retired the next three hitters in order, but Anderson's homer has given the Pale Hose a 1-0 lead after one.

White Sox 2nd: Grandal and Jimenez drew back-to-back walks to start the inning. Gavin Sheets was next, and here's how Kenny called it:

"Sheets has been a very versatile player for the White Sox since his debut on June 29. He's not only been a DH, he's also played both corner outfield positions and first base. He also started at first base in Game 1 of this series, Right now, he's trying to at least move the runners up, as the White Sox try to stay alive here in Game 4. First pitch.....THAT BALL IS CRUSHED TO DEEP CENTER! SPRINGER TAKES ONE STEP BACK, BUT THIS ONE'S IN THE UPPER DECK! WHAT A BLAST BY GAVIN SHEETS! IT'S 4-0 CHICAGO!........Sheets has power; he hit eleven home runs in just fifty-four games, and he showed it off again right here, Buck."

Martinez: "Manoah hung a curveball out over the plate. That's a mistake with any hitter, but especially with one as powerful as Gavin Sheets. It's amazing to me that a ball can travel as far as this one did in almost the middle of October, but that's how strong Sheets is and how much power he provided. Pitching coach Pete Walker
s on his way out to the mound to talk to Manoah, who needs to calm down and refocus before he puts his team even further behind,"

Garcia grounded to Espinal at third for out number one, but Manoah muffed Cesar Hernandez's comebacker, allowing him to reach. Manoah recovered to strike Anderson out swinging, and Moncada was called out on strikes to retire the side, But Sheets' three-run blast has extended the Sox lead to 4-0 at the end of two,

Blue Jays 5th: With one out, Jansen faced White Sox starter Carlos Rodon. Here's Kenny with the count one ball and one strike:

"A reminder that we no longer have a travel day between Chicago and Toronto, so Game 5 will be tomorrow night at the Rogers Centre if it's necessary. We would be on the air at 7PM Eastern with the pregame show, First pitch would be shortly after 8PM Eastern. Rodon has only allowed two hits over the first four and a third innings, both singles by Teoscar Hernandez. One out here in the top of the fifth, with the White Sox leading 4-0. One-one pitch.....High fly ball going deep to right center, back is Robert, he's at the track, now to the wall......IT'S GONE!.......That was kind of unexpected, as Robert looked like he had the ball in his sights until it went over the fence to put the Blue Jays on the board."

Martinez: "This ball was well-hit, but I thought it would drop in and roll to the wall. It kept carrying and carrying, and Robert looked like he'd make the catch at the wall, but it went over the wall instead. Look at Robert; he shrugs his shoulders as he turns back to the field as if to say, 'What else could I have done?' Now let's see if the Jays can keep things going."

They couldn't as Rodon retired Grichuk and Springer on back-to-back flies to left center to end the inning. But the Jays are on the board thanks to Jansen's dinger, and they trail the Chisox 4-1 midway through Game 4.

Blue Jays 8th: Grichuk led off against a tiring Rodon. Here's Kenny with the count two balls and no strikes:

"This is probably the last hitter for Rodon, as Garrett Crochet is just about ready in the Chicago bullpen and would come on to face Springer. Rodon just trying to find the plate and make Grichuk put the ball in play somewhere. Grandal sets up a bit inside, and here's the two-ball pitch........HIT HIGH AND DEEP TO LEFT! JIMENEZ BACK, HE'S AT THE WALL, AND IT'S GONE!........Every run in this game so far has come via the home run, and Grichuk's shot has cut the White Sox' lead to 4-2 here in the eighth."

Martinez: "This ball was crushed. It was supposed to be a curve, I think, but it just came straight over the heart of the plate right inro Grichuk]s wheelhouse. (White Sox manager) Tony LaRussa's coming out of the dugout, and you have to wonder why he let Rodon start the inning at all. He had nothing on any of the pitches we saw in that at-bat."

Springer's line drive was caught by Cesar Hernandez for the first out, but Marcus Semien and Guerrero drew back-to-back walks. Bo Bichette flew to Robert in shallow center for the second out, but Teoscar stroked a base hit to right center that scored Semien to make it a 4-3 game. Gurriel was next, and his single to left brought Vlad home to tie the game at four. Jose Ruiz relieved Crochet and ended the inning by getting Espinal to bounce into a fielder's choice, but the Jays have tied the game with three runs on three hits and two walks while leaving runners at first and second. As we head to the bottom of the eighth on the south side of Chicago, it's Blue Jays 4, White Sox 4.

White Sox 8th: Anderson led off against Jays reliever Adam Cimber with a double off the wall in center. Moncada's tapper to first moved him to third, but he had to hold when Robert's line drive was speared by Semien for out number two, That brought Abreu to the plate. Here's Kenny with the count one ball and two strikes:

"Cimber is just one strike away from stranding the tying run at third. Liam Hendriks and Aaron Bummer throwing in the White Sox bullpen; it's probable that we would see Bummer if the game is tied, Hendriks if they take the lead and are in a save situation. Cimber checks Anderson at third, now the one-two pitch,,,,ground ball, BASE HIT INTO RIGHT! ANDERSON WILL SCORE, AND THE WHITE SOX RETAKE THE LEAD 5-4!........They lost a 4-0 lead when the Blue Jays tied the game with one in the fifth and three in the eighth, but they've now reclaimed it thanks to Jose Abreu, and now Bummer sits down, because we'll definitely see Hendriks in the ninth,"

Grandal's grounder to short ended the inning, but the Sox have taken the lead thanks to Abreu's RBI single. Hendriks will face Jansen, Grichuk and Springer in the ninth, as the Sox try to force Game 5 in Toronto by holding on to a 5-4 lead.

The home squad suffered a brief scare when Cesar's throw past Abreu at first on Springer's grounder allowed George to reach, but Semien was called out on strikes to end the game, The Sox had won a 5-4 thriller, and this best-of-five series was tied at two games apiece and headed back to Toronto for the deciding Game 5 tomorrow night.

Abreu was named Player of the Game by FS1 by virtue of his game-winning hit, For the second game in a row, Anderson was the only man in the Chicago lineup with more than one hit; he was two for four with a home run and scored twice, Jimenez walked twice.

For the Blue Jays, Hernandez was the offensive leader; he was three for four and drove in a run, The Jays struck out twelve times as a team; Guerrero struck out three times and was hitless in three official at-bats with a walk. The Jays as a team have struck out twenty-seven times over the last two games. Semien drew two of the team's four walks in Game 4.

W- Crochet (1-0)
S- Hendriks (1)
L- Cimber (0-1)

HR- TOR: Jansen (1), Grichuk (1)
CWS: Anderson (2), Sheets (1)

The Blue Jays have hit nine home runs in four games, while the White Sox have hit six,

The series will be decided by Game 5 tomorrow night at the Rogers Centre, First pitch is scheduled for shortly after 8PM Eastern, Lance Lynn will start for the White Sox, while Hyun-Jin Ryu takes the ball for the Blue Jays,

Next: We look at Game 5.

Now it's time for Game 5 of the second American League Division Series from the Rogers Centre in Toronto, The date is Wednesday, October 13:

Lineup Changes:

White Sox
- Jose Abreu moves up to third and will serve as the designated hitter, Yasmani Grandal moves up to the cleanup spot. Luis Robert moves down to fifth, Gavin Sheets gets the start at first base. Adam Engel is back in right field and will bat eighth, Finally, Leury Garcia moves from right field back to second base and will bat ninth,

Let's run down the umpires for tonight's game:

Home Plate: Greg Gibson
First Base: Brian Knight
Second Base: Dan Bellino
Third Base: D.J. Reyburn
Left Field: Sam Holbrook
Right Field: Ron Kulpa

White Sox 1st: Tim Anderson drew a leadoff walk, Yoan Moncada struck out swinging for out number one, but Anderson stole second on the third strike. He held while Abreu grounded to short for the second out, but Grandal's bloop single to left brought him home to give the Sox a 1-0 lead. Robert lifted a fly ball to deep left center that looked like a home run off the bat, but George Springer made the catch at the wall to end the inning. The visitors have broken on top thanks to a walk, a stolen base, and a bloop hit; now let's welcome the Jays.

Blue Jays 2nd: Bo Bichette led off against White Sox starter Lance Lynn. Here's Kenny Albert with the count one ball and one strike:

"The Blue Jays actually asked Major League Baseball if they could host a playoff game at either their spring training complex in Dunedin, Florida or Sahlen Field in Buffalo as a thank-you to each city for hosting them during the pandemic, but the stadiums were simply too small to accommodate both the media and its equipment, So they've decided to give half-price tickets to anyone who can produce a ticket stub or parking pass from either venue. About a thousand people from Florida and over five thousand from Buffalo have taken advantage so far, with more expected if the team moves on to the ALCS.

Pitch to Bichette is HIT HIGH AND DEEP TO LEFT CENTER FIELD! ROBERT IS BACK, HE'S AT THE WALL, BUT THIS ONE IS GONE!.......Bo Bichette with a home run reminiscent of the ones that his father Dante used to hit regularly, and this game is tied at one."

Buck Martinez: "The Blue Jays have now hit ten home runs in five games, but this is Bo's first, and it's a beauty. He turned on a hanging slider right over the heart of the plate, and it got out of here in a hurry."

Teoscar Hernandez struck out swinging for out number one, but Lourdes Gurriel Jr. kept the inning alive with a single to left. But Lynn retired Espinal on a fly to shallow left, and Danny Jansen grounded to second to end the inning. Bichette's homer has tied the game at one as we move to the third.

White Sox 3rd: Anderson led off with a single to left, then stole second. Moncada took a called third strike for out number one, but Abreu stroked a base hit to left thar scored Anderson and put the Sox in front 2-1. Grandal was caught looking for the second out, but Robert lined a single to left center to put runners at the corners. Jimenez's bouncer to Marcus Semien at second ended the inning with runners still at first and third, but the Pale Hose have taken the lead thanks to two singles and a stolen base, As we go to the bottom of the third it's White Sox 2, Blue Jays 1.

White Sox 6th: Jimenez led off against Jays starter Hyun-Jin Ryu. Here's Kenny with the count one ball and one strike:

"Jimenez is 0 for 2 so far tonight. He popped up to Espinal in foul territory in the second, then grounded out to second with runners at first and third in the third. The White Sox are looking for their first trip to the ALCS since 2012, when they lost that epic series to the Yankees. They're also looking to erase last year's loss to the Twins in a five-game classic in this round. They haven't won a world championship since 1917, which is the longest active championship drought in all of North American professional sports.

The one-one to Jimenez......high fly ball going deep to left center! Springer is back, he's to the wall, but THIS BALL IS GONE!......The White Sox have just hit their seventh home run of this series, which makes a total of seventeen by the two teams. Jimenez's shot has given the White Sox a 3-1 lead here in the sixth."

Martinez: "Ryu may be tiring a bit, as this slider has no bite whatsoever, which makes it easy for Jimenez to jump all over it and hit it within a few feet of where Bichette's ball landed earlier in the game. It didn't look like it was hit quite as hard, but looks can be deceiving here in the booth,"

Albert: "Left center field is 375 feet away from home plate at the Rogers Centre. Bichette's homer traveled 407 feet, and Jimenez' homer traveled 403 feet,"

Sheets' fly to right center was caught by Springer in the power alley for the second out, but Engel walked to keep the inning alive, and Garcia banged a double off the wall in right to bring him home and increase the Chicago lead to 4-1. Anderson followed with a base hit to left center that scored Garcia to make it 5-1, That spelled the end of Ryu's evening; Adam Cimber came out of the Jays' bullpen to strike out Moncada and end the inning. Bur the Sox have scored three runs on three hits and a walk, and as we go to the bottom of the sixth they lead the Jays 5-1.

Blue Jays 6th: With one out, Vladimir Guerrero doubled to right. Bichette grounded a base hit to right center that brought Vlad home and cut the Sox' lead to 5-2. Bo then stole second, but had to hold while Hernandez grounded to Moncada at third for the second out. Gurriel followed with a double into the left center power alley that scored Bichette to make it a 5-3 game. Espinal's shallow fly to left ended the inning, but the Jays have countered the White Sox' three-spot with a pair of their own thanks to three hits. Gurriel was left at second, but at the end of six in Game 5, it's Chicago 5, Toronto 3,

Blue Jays 7th: With one out, Randal Grichuk doubled to left. The Sox tried a pickoff play, and it worked, as Grichuk was caught off the bag at second. Unfortunately, Grandal's throw sailed over Garcia's head and into center field, allowing Grichuk to go to third. Springer's pop fly was caught by Anderson behind second base for out number two. Semien was next, and here's Kenny with the count one ball and two strikes:

"This is almost certainly the end of the night for Lance Lynn, as Guerrero's on deck and the White Sox figure to want a fresh arm to face him, regardless of when it is, Lynn one pitch away from going seven tough innings with his team's season on the line and turning the game over to the bullpen with the lead. Gets the sign, checks Grisham at third, he stays put, and the one-two pitch........hit down the left field line and toward the corner! Over is Jimenez, he's at the wall, and IT'S GONE!.......Marcus Semien ties the game for the Blue Jays with a two-run homer, and Lance Lynn goes from potential hero to the latest of many goats in the White Sox' checkered history."

Martinez: "The surprise is that it took Semien this long to hit a home run in this series. He hit forty-seven homers this season, and this one isn't exactly a work of art, but Semien has enough power to muscle it over the wall. You can hear the cries of frustration and pain all the way from the south side of Chicago, or at least you could if this place wasn't going berserk."

Jose Ruiz relieved a disconsolate Lynn and got Vlad to take a called third strike to end the inning. but Semien's two-run shot has tied Game 5 at five after seven.

Blue Jays 8th: Bichette led off with a double off the right field wall, his fourth hit of the night. He remained at second while Hernandez grounded to third for out number one, which brought Gurriel to the plate. Here's Kenny:

"There you see the Toronto bullpen, as Jordan Romano is getting ready to pitch the top of the ninth, and it seems like he'll pitch whether the Jays take the lead or not. No one throwing in the White Sox bullpen, at least not yet. Guriel already has two hits tonight, including an RBI double in the sixth. Ruiz ready, Gurriel ready, and here's the first pitch.........line drive, BASE HIT LEFT FIELD! Bichette scores easily, and the Blue Jays complete their comeback and take a 6-5 lead!"

Espinal walked to put two men on, but Jansen popped to Sheets at first for the second out and Grichuk flew to left center to end the inning. But the Jays have completed their comeback thanks to Gurriel's RBI single, and now closer Jordan Romano needs just three outs to send the Jays to the ALCS. He'll face Abreu, Robert, and Grandal while trying to protect a 6-5 lead.

Romano walked Grandal with one out, but struck Robert out swinging to put the Jays one out away from the ALCS. He then got ahead of Jimenez one ball and two strikes. Here's Kenny:

"The White Sox down to their final strike, and if Jimenez is retired it will mean a hundred and four years without a world championship for them and over two hundred combined seasons with only one world championship for the city of Chicago. Meanwhile, the Blue Jays are looking for their first world championship since 1993, and this is the first step. Romano wants it now, and so does the entire country of Canada and a good portion of western New York as well. One-two to Jimenez.........STRIKE THREE SWINGING! THE BLUE JAYS ARE HEADED TO THE ALCS!..........Lourdes Gurriel Jr. with the game-winning hit in the bottom of the eighth, and Jordan Romano works around a walk here in the ninth to hold the White Sox off the board.

Gurriel was three for four with two runs driven in, but our Player of the Game is Bo Bichette, who was four for four with a home run, three runs scored, two runs driven in, and a stolen base. all with his famous father Dante watching proudly. Marcus Semien had the game-tying two-run homer in the seventh and drove in three runs in all. For the White Sox, Leury Garcia was two for four with a run scored and another run driven in, and Tim Anderson finished a great individual series by going two for four, scoring twice, and driving in a run.

Once again, our final score: the Toronto Blue Jays 6, the Chicago White Sox 5, and the Blue Jays win this series three games to two, For Buck Martinez and our entire crew at FS1, I'm Kenny Albert saying so long from the Rogers Centre in Toronto. Kevin Burkhardt and company will be along with our postgame show right after these messages."

Final totals: Blue Jays 6-11-0, White Sox 5-9-1.

W- Dolis (1-0)
S- Romano (2)
L- Ruiz (0-1)

HR- CWS: Jimenez (1)

Now it's time for Game 1 of the first 2021 American League Division Series from Minute Maid Park in Houston, The date is Thursday, October 7:

Astros 1st: With one out, left fielder Michael Brantley lined a single to left. Third baseman Alex Bregman went down swinging for out number two. but designated hitter Yordan Alvarez singled to right to put two men on. First baseman Yuli Gurriel followed with a lined single to left to score Brantley and give the Stros a 1-0 lead while Alvarez went to third. Shortstop Carlos Correa struck out swinging to end the inning, The Stros have put together three hits to take the lead, but they've also left runners at the corners. After one, it's Astros 1, Rays 0.

Rays 2nd: With one out, first baseman Jordan Luplow and right fielder Manuel Margot drew back-to-back walks against Astros starter Lance McCullers Jr. Catcher Mike Zunino uncorked a fly ball to dead center that chased the Astros' Jake Meyers back to the wall before he could make the catch; Luplow moved to third. Center fielder Kevin Kiermayer's single up the middle scored Luplow to tie the game at one and moved Margot to third. Left fielder Randy Arozarena struck out swinging to end the inning, but the Rays have tied the game thanks to a pair of walks, a long fly ball, and Kiermayer's single while leaving runners at the corners. We're tied at one after an inning and a half.

Astros 2nd: Right fielder Kyle Tucker drew a walk against Rays starter Luis Patino. Meyers took a called third strike for out number one. Ticker then stole second, and catcher Martin Maldonado followed with a double off the center field wall. Tucker scored easily, and the Astros led 2-1. Maldonado was promptly picked off for the second out, and second baseman Jose Altuve's fly to Arozarena in shallow left ended the inning. Maldonado's double has given the Western Division champions a 2-1 lead after two.

Rays 3rd: Shortstop Wander Franco drew a leadoff walk, Second baseman Brandon Lowe took a called third strike for out number one, which brought designated hitter Nelson Cruz to the plate. Here's Joe Buck with the count one ball and no strikes:

"The last time we saw Nelson Cruz in the postseason was during the Twins' classic playoff run last year. He was the heart and soul of that ballclub, which outlasted the White Sox in five games to take their ALDS, then pushed the Astros to the limit before falling in a seven-game ALCS. Cruz had the flu for most of that run, during which the Twins played twelve games in thirteen days at Petco Park in San Diego. We won't forget any time soon his big hit to win Game 6 of that ALCS, nor the image of him being picked up off the ground and carried into the clubhouse after the winning run scored to avoid contaminating his teammates before Game 7.

Right now, he's facing a 1-0 pitch from Lance McCullers Jr........THAT BALL IS HAMMER DEEP TO CENTER! MEYERS IS BACK AT THE TRACK, AT THE WALL, BUT THIS BALL IS GONE!......Cruz made what has to be at least a 450-foot home run look easy, and the Rays lead 3-2 here in the third."

John Smoltz: "This is a strike right down the middle from McCullers, who obviously thought that he could sneak one by Cruz. Well, now he's learned a painful lesson, because Cruz squares up on the pitch and absolutely blasts it. He may be forty-one, but he hasn't lost much either in power or bat speed. All Meyers can do is take two steps back and watch the ball fly out of here. "

Third baseman Yandy Diaz beat out a bouncer to third for an infield single to keep the inning going, but Luplow and Margot each struck out swinging to end the inning. Cruz's two-run homer has given the visitors a 3-2 lead after two and a half.

Astros 3rd: Third baseman Alex Bregman walked with one out. Alvarez's single to left put two men on. Gurriel's shallow fly to right center was caught by Kiermaier for the second out, which brought shortstop Carlos Correa to the plate. Here's Joe with the count no balls and a strike:

"The Astros are looking to continue a run which began in 2015, when they defeated the New York Mets to become the first team to win a world championship in both leagues. They're looking for their fourth consecutive trip to the ALCS and their fifth in the last seven years as well as their third consecutive berth in the World Series. The American League hasn't seen this kind of dominance since the Oakland teams in the late eighties, who went to the World Series in three straight years from 1988 to 1990. only winning in 1989.

No balls and one strike to Correa, Patino checks the runner at second, and here's the next pitch........HIGH FLY BALL GOING DEEP TO LEFT! AROZARENA BACK, AT THE TRACK, AT THE WALL, AND GONE! CARLOS CORREA WITH A THREE-RUN BLAST HERE IN THE THIRD, AND THE ASTROS NOW LEAD 5-3......That ball seemed to be hit as hard as Cruz's, John,"

John Smoltz: "Both balls were traveled at well over a hundred miles an hour, but this one didn't have nearly as far to go, It was still an impressive shot in its ow right, and Patino knew he'd made a mistake as soon as he threw it, He aimed for the outside corner, but it ended up out over the heart of the plate, and Correa got every bit of it,"

Tucker followed with a single to right, then stole second. Meyers walked to put two men on, but Maldonado struck out swinging to retire the side. The Stros have left runners at first and second, but Correa's three-run shot has given them the lead once more. After three, it's Houston 5, Tampa Bay 3.

Astros 4th: Second baseman Jose Altuve led off. Here's Joe with the count two balls and no strikes:

"Patino doesn't figure to last too much longer, as Drew Rasmussen is getting ready in the Rays' bullpen. He and Patino switched places for this series to give the Rays another long reliever in their bullpen, and it looks like he'll be used early on, Patino's already thrown sixty-one pitches in a little over three innings,, so it's no surprise that he's tiring a bit. Zunino sets up inside, two-ball pitch IS A BULLET TO LEFT! AROZARENA BACK TO THE TRACK, BUT THIS ONE'S ALREADY GONE!......This one got out in a hurry, as Correa extends the Houston lead to 6-3 here in the fourth, and here comes (Rays manager) Kevin Cash; he's already made the signal for Rasmussen."

Smoltz: "You won't see too many balls get out quicker than that one did, Joe. It helped that it was hit to left field, which is the shortest part of t park, but even at that it left in a hurry, Randy Arozarena gets back to the warning track just in time to see the ball leave the yard. and I'm wondering why Rasmussen didn't start this inning in the first place,"

Brantley greeted Rasmussen with a lined single up the middle, but Drew got the next three outs with ease: Bregman popped to short, Alvarez's liner was speared by Luplow, and Gurriel struck out swinging. But the home squad has added a run on Correa's homer, and they now lead the Rays 6-3 after four,

Rays 8th: With two out, catcher Mike Zunino faced Astros reliever Bryan Abreu. Here's Joe with the count no balls and two strikes:

"Zunino had a career-high thirty-four home runs in the regular season, including one in the tiebreaker game against the Blue Jays. He finished one run batted i shirt of his career high of sixty-four, which happened when he was with the Mariners in 2017. (Astros closer) Ryan Pressly's ready for the ninth, although *Astros manager) Dusty Baker told us that he would bring him in for at least part of the eighth inning if he felt the game slipping away. Right now, though, Abreu has matters well in hand. ZUNINO WHACKS ONE DEEP TO STRAIGHTAWAY CENTER! BACK IS MEYERS, AT THE TRACK, AT THE WALL, AND THIS BALL IS GONE!......Mike Zunino goes deep here in the eighth to bring the Rays within two runs at 6-4, and here comes Baker; he wants Pressly right now."

Smoltz: "Even with the home run we just saw, this surprises me a bit, Abreu got the first two outs on just six pitches and looked really dominant. I'm guessing that Dusty wants to make doubly sure that the Astros get at least a split at home, and since the win in Game 1 is just four outs away, he wants to nail it down,"

Buck: "Zunino's home run traveled 454 feet, which makes it the longest homer of the night so far. Correa's third-inning homer to center traveled 446 feet."

Pressly struck Kiermayer out swinging on three pitches to end the inning. The Rays have crept a run closer on Zunino's homer, but they still trail 6-4 after seven and a half.

That was all the scoring. Franco singled to center with one out, but Pressly got Lowe to bounce into a 3-6-3 game-ending double play. Our final: Astros 6, Rays 4, and the Astros lead the best-of-five series one game to none.

Correa was named Player of the Game by FS1 for his third-inning homer that gave the Astros the lead for good. Brantley was three for four and scored a run, and Tucker was one for three with a run scored and stole a pair of bases. McCullers got the win, giving up three runs on three hits while walking five and striking out twelve. The Astros' pitchers struck out a total of fourteen Tampa Bay hitters; Arozarena struck out four times in five at-bats.

Cruz was the offensive leader for the Rays; he was one for two with a run scored, two RBIs, and two walks. Patino and Rasmussen combined to strike out fourteen Houston hitters. with Rasmussen punching out nine over the final five innings. He only allowed two baserunners: Meyers walked with two out in the fifth and Brantley singled with one out in the sixth.

Final totals: Astros 6-10-0, Rays 4-6-0.

W- McCullers Jr. (1-0)
L- Patino (0-1)

HR- TB: Cruz (1), Zunino (1)
HOU: Correa (1), Altuve (1)

The series will continue tomorrow afternoon here at Minute Maid Park. First pitch is scheduled for shortly after 4PM Eastern, with Michael Wacha starting for the Rays and Framber Valdez pitching for the Astros.

Now it's time for Game 2 of the first American League Division Series from Minute Maid Park in Houston. The date is Friday, October 8:

Lineup Changes:

Astros- Michael Brantley and Yordan Alvarez exchange positions; Brantley will start in left field, while Alvarez serves as the designated hitter. Also, Chas McCormick replaces Jake Meyers in center field and will bat eighth.

Astros 1st: With one out, Brantley faced Rays starter Michael Wacha. Here's Joe Buck with the count one ball and one strike:

"Brantley's been hounded by injuries during most of his career, so the Astros have been using him as a designated hitter more often since he joined them back in 2019. He played in 121 games this season, still starting mostly in left field, although he played some right field as well, starting eight games out there. Today, he's the DH after starting in left field yesterday. One-one pitch from Wacha is HIT HIGH AND DEEP TO LEFT CENTER FIELD, BACK IS KIERMAIER, AT THE TRACK, AT THE WALL, AND GONE!........How else would you expect an ALDS game to start? It's been a home run derby both here and up in Toronto, and the Astros strike first in Game 2 of this series."

John Smoltz: "Brantley's not a big-time home run hitter by today's standards; the most he's ever his in one season is twenty-two, and he only hit eight this season, But he can pounce on a mistake pitch with the best of them, and this one ended up too far down the middle. A lot of the pitchers we've seen in this postseason take a while to settle down, and until they do, they're at the hitters' mercy. Trust someone who's been there; it isn't exactly pleasant,"

After Alex Bregman grounded to third for the second out, Alvarez kept the inning alive with a single to right center. Home plate umpire Chris Conroy called a balk on Wacha because he didn't come to a full stop on his one-one pitch to Gurriel; Alvarez was awarded second base on the play. Yuli lined Wacha's next pitch up the middle for a base hit to bring home Gurriel and put the home squad in front 2-0. Carlos Correa flew to Kiermaier in left center to end the inning, but the Stros have scored two tuns on three hits and a balk, and they lead 2-0 after one.

The Defensive Play of the Night came in the bottom of the sixth, Bregman had drawn a leadoff walk, and Alvarez was at the plate with a count of one ball and one strike. Here's Joe:

"Fly ball to right, not very deep. Coming in is Margot, ball is dropping, dives AND MAKES THE CATCJH!......Manuel Margot just robbed Alvarez of a base hit with a beautiful diving catch, and even Alvarez has to give him (Margot) his props as he heads back to the dugout. Here's Gurriel."

Rays 7th: With one out, Nelson Cruz doubled into the left center power alley, and Joey Wendle ran for him. Yandy Diaz's lined single to right put runners at the corners, Jordan Luplow grounded the first pitch he saw to Gurriel, who threw to second for the force on Diaz while Wendle scored the first Tampa run. Manuel Marot walked to put two men on, but Mike Zunino's liner was gloved by Correa to end the inning. The Rays have scratched across their first run of the game, but they've also left two runners on base, including the potential tying run in scoring position. As we stretch in Game 2, it's Houston 2, Tampa Bay 1.

Astros 7th; Kyle Tucker took Rays reliever Collin McHugh's first pitch off of his shin, then stole second. He held there while McCormick was retired on a comebacker, then scored when Martin Maldonado lined a single to right. Jose Altuve flew to center for out number two, but Brantley walked to put two on with two out. Bregman struck out swinging to end the inning, but the Stros have added an insurance run on a hit, a hit batsman, and a stolen base. They've also left two men on base, which could come back to haunt them later. At the end of seven, it's Stros 3, Rays 1.

Astros 8th: With one out, Gurriel singled to left center. Correa's base hit to left moved him to third, and he came home when Tucker bounced into a force play to put the Stros ahead 4-1. McCormick's fly to deep left center was caught by Kiermaier to end the inning, but the home squad has added another run to take a 4-1 lead to the top of the ninth.

That was all the scoring; Ryan Pressly earned his second save in as many days by retiring the Rays one-two-three in the top of the ninth o only eight pitches. Luplow flew to left to end the game. Final score: Astros 4, Rays 1, and the Astros lead the best-of-five series two games to none.

Gurriel was named Player of the Game by FS1. He was four for four with a run scored and an RBI. He narrowly got the award over Valdez. who held the Rays to one run on four hits over eight strong innings while walking two, striking out two, and throwing an even one hundred pitches.

Franco was the only Ray with more than one hit; he was two for four. Wacha pitched well in a losing cause, holding the Stros to two runs on five hits over five innings while walking two and striking out four. He threw seventy-five pitches.

Final totals: Astros 4-8-0. Rays 1-4-0,

W- Valdez (1-0)
S- Pressly (2)
L- Wacha (0-1)

HR- HOU: Brantley (1)

The series shifts to Tropicana Field in St. Petersburg for Game 3 on Sunday afternoon. First pitch is scheduled for shortly after 4PM Eastern, with Lus Garcia starting for the Astros and Shane McClanahan pitching for the Rays.

Next: We look at Game 3.
