Now we'll examine our last doubleheader in August. It's August 7, and the Blue Jays are entertaining the Red Sox at Rogers Centre,

Game 1:

As we pick up the action, the Blue Jays lead 1-0 in the bottom of the seventh after second baseman Marcus Semien's leadoff home run,

There was no further scoring. Jays reliever Rafael Dolis stranded the tying run at second in the top of the ninth to earn his fifth save of the season.

Game 2:

As we pick up the action, the Red Sox are leading 2-1 after eight innings,

The Blue Jays tied the game in the bottom of the ninth. Right fielder Teoscar Hernandez was the courtesy runner, and he moved to third on left fielder Corey Dickerson's base hit up the middle. Dickerson stole second, but both runners had to hold when center fielder Randal Grichuk popped to Red Sox first baseman Franchy Cordero for out number one. Third baseman Breyvic Valera's single to left scored Hernandez to tie the game at two,

The Red Sox exploded for seven runs in the top of the tenth. Designated hitter Christian Vazquez was the courtesy runner. After one out, shortstop Jonathan Arauz was hit in the shin by a pitch. Second baseman Kike Hernandez and left fielder Alex Verdugo each drew a walk to load the bases, and shortstop Xander Bogaerts lined a double into the left center power alley to clear the bases and give the Bosox a 5-2 lead. Third baseman Rafael Devers lifted a fly to left that was dropped by Blue Jays left fielder Corey Dickerson, allowing Devers to reach. With runners at the corners, right fielder Hunter Renfroe's base hit to right center scored Bogaerts to make it 6-2 Boston.

After second baseman Marwin Gonzalez was hit in the leg to load the bases again, Vazquez slapped a base hit through the hole and into left field. Devers and Renfroe scored, and the Red Sox led 9-2.

The Blue Jays got a run back in the bottom of the tenth. Catcher Reese McGuire was the courtesy runner; he moved to third on designated hitter George Springer's grounder to first and scored when first baseman Vladimir Guerrero Jr. hit a fly ball to right that dropped on the warning track and hopped over the wall for a book-rule double.

We begin our examination of September with a single game from Tuesday, September 28. The Mets are hosting the Marlins in a doubleheader at Citi Field, and Game 2 was won by the Mets 2-1 in the regulation nine innings. That leaves Game 1 to finish, and the Mets lead 5-2 after six and a half innings.

The Marlins scored five runs in the top of the eighth. Shortstop Jazz Chisholm Jr. reached when Mets second baseman Javier Baez fumbled his grounder. Left fielder Bryan De La Cruz's single to left put runners at the corners, and a walk to right fielder Jesus Sanchez loaded the bases. First baseman Lewin Diaz's sacrifice fly to right center brought Chisholm home to cut the Mets' lead to 5-3. Mets manager Luis Rojas left reliever Trevor May in the game to pitch to pinch hitter Jorge Alfaro, who was batting for catcher Nick Fortes. The strategy backfired, as Alfaro lined the first pitch he saw into left field to score De La Cruz and Sanchez and tie the game at five.

Jeurys Familia came out of the bullpen to face second baseman Joe Panik, who lined the first pitch he saw off the wall in center. Alfaro scored, and the Fish led 6-5. Third baseman Eddy Alvarez went down swinging for out number two, but center fielder Magneuris Sierra's bloop single to center brought Panik home with the seventh Miami run,

Closer Dylan Florio pitched a perfect ninth to earn his sixteenth save of the year.

W- Richard Bleier (4-2)
S- Florio (16)
L- May (6-4)

Original winning pitcher Marcus Stroman's record is now 8-11. Edwin Diaz's save has been disallowed; he now has thirty. Original losing pitcher Zach Thompson's record is now 3-6.

The Marlins have moved into fourth place in the National League East by themselves with a record of 73-89, twenty and a half games behind the Braves. The Mets are now 75-87, good enough for third place in the East, eighteen and a half games behind Atlanta.

The updated standings in the East:

Braves: 93-68
Phillies: 81-81- 12.5 GB
Mets: 75-87- 18.5 GB
Marlins: 73-89- 19;5 GB
Nationals: 72-90- 21.5 GB

Next: To be determined.

I've found another "one-game" doubleheader that we have yet to examine. It's Saturday, September4, and the Nationals are hosting the Mets at Nationals Park. The Mets won Game 2 11-9 in the regulation nine innings, so we only need to look at Game 1. As we join the action after six and a half, the Nationals are leading 4-3.

The Nats scored three times in the bottom of the seventh. Catcher Riley Adams drew a leadoff walk but was forced by second baseman Luis Garcia. Center fielder Lane Thomas' base hit to left put runners at the corners, and a walk to shortstop Alcides Escobar loaded the bases. That brought up right fielder Juan Soto, whose lined single to right center scored Garcia and Thomas and gave the Nats a 6-3 lead. First baseman Josh Bell followed with a sacrifice fly to deep right that allowed Escobar to score the seventh Washington run.

The Mets got a run back in the top of the eighth. Right fielder Michael Conforto drew a leadoff walk but was forced by third baseman J.D. Davis. Center fielder Kevin Pillar's single up the middle put two men on, but the runners had to hold when left fielder Jeff McNeil flew to Thomas in center field for the second out, Catcher James McCann was next, and he dumped a base hit into shallow center to score Davis and trim the Nats' lead to 7-4 and close out the scoring.

Nats reliever Sam Clay pitched a perfect ninth to record his first save of the season. This means that Kyle Finnegan's save has been disallowed. He now has nine for the year.

DS- Finnegan (9)

There was no movement in the standings.

Game 2:

He held at second while designated hitter Jose Ramirez flew to shallow right and right fielder Franmil Reyes struck out swinging. First baseman Bobby Bradley was up next, and he hit a two-run homer into the seats in right center field to cut the Minnesota lead to 6-5. It was Bradley's seventeenth home run of the season.

The Twins answered with a run of their own in the bottom of the eighth. With two out, first baseman Miguel Sano hit a home run to straightaway center. It was his thirty-first of the year.

Twins reliever Tyler Duffey pitched a perfect ninth to earn his fourth save of the season. This means that Alex Colome's save has been disallowed. He now has sixteen for the year.
